XBLA: You Can No Longer Chase Dorito Trucks With Dinosaurs

dashofdestructoin.pngWith the boxing day sales currently on I picked up a new Xbox 360 for my brother, hooked him up with a Xbox Live membership, bought him a copy of Trials HD, and went to download Doritos Dash Of Destruction.

But it was not there.

It appears the honeymoon for the free Xbox Live Arcade title is over - you can not download Doritos Dash Of Destruction off the Xbox Live Marketplace anymore. I don't think it was ever explicitly said whether it was a timed deal like Yaris, but that seems to be the case.

You can still download the trailer if you so wish, but that's all.

DSiWare, WiiWare: EU Nintendo Update - Rayman, TV Show King 2 And More

tvshowking.jpg

The Christmas Nintendo update for Europe is unfortunately not as good as the past few weeks, but it's still got a few titles you might be interested in getting your young sister when they open their new Wii or DSi systems.

WiiWare has two new titles - TV Show King 2 for 800 Points and The Mystery Of Whiterock Castle for 700 Points.

DSi owners can now play the DS port of the original Rayman for 800 Points, Art Academy for 800 Points, Sparkle Snapshots for 500 Points, A Little Bit of... Magic Made Fun for 200 Points, and Me and My Dogs: Friends Forever for 800 Points. The last title being a little interesting - it's Gameloft's own Dog based game. I don't know if it'll be as big as Nintendogs, but it's probably the best DSiWare has to offer in that field right now.

PSN, WiiWare, XBLA: GamerBytes Best Of 2009: Top 5 Console Downloadable Games

trialsdude.jpg[As run on big sister site Gamasutra before the holidays and now reprinted here, Ryan Langley of GamerBytes ranks the Top 5 Console Downloadable Games of 2009 from his perspective.]

Do you remember the launch of Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade for the Xbox 360 back in 2005? On offer, it hosted games like Gauntlet, Joust, Smash TV and Bejeweled 2 -- titles that most of us had played before and all limited to their 50MB file size.

But there was a little gem stuck in there called Geometry Wars, and that addictive little top-down shooter has shaped what the Xbox Live Arcade -- and digitally downloaded console games -- have become today.

Four years later, PlayStation Network and WiiWare have joined the mix -- as well as DSiWare and PSP Minis. We’ve got games hitting 2GB in size, we’ve got a digital-only Battlefield game that has sold well over a million copies, and we’ve got individual indie guys like James Silva (Dishwasher: Dead Samurai). The industry has certainly changed its perspective.

And just the leaps in quality are amazing. Just try to go back and play Jewel Quest on Xbox Live Arcade – it’s a mess of an interface, limited by the ideas of the time and the file size. We’ve come a long way. Just for consoles, we’ve seen over 250 games this year for Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and WiiWare.

And 2009 has been a testing ground of sorts. Xbox Live Arcade began the year with a test of player’s wallets with the rise of the $15 game -- producing variable results. The PlayStation Network showcased many stylish games, with Flower and Noby Noby Boy headlining the world of the strange, while WiiWare’s arguably best tactic was mining our childhood memories with Contra Rebirth and Excitebike: World Rally.

Now, as the year comes to an end, we're choosing five favorites. Every person will have a different experience, but these 5 titles were the ones we had the most fun with.

castlevaniatarfinally.png

XBLA: New Footage: Toy Soldiers (Signal Studios)

GameTrailers have added some new footage of Toy Soldiers, the upcoming real-time tower defense game in both single player and multi-player modes.

It looks quite nice so far, I'm glad they've added split-screen battles too, it's a feature usually kept out of XBLA games of this type.

For the multiplayer footage, click the link below.

WiiWare: Trailer: Fast Draw Showdown (Digital Leisure)

Digital Leisure surprised us a few weeks ago by bringing FMV game Dragon's Lair to DSiWare, but now they're drudging through the American Laser Games catalog with Fast Draw Showdown on WiiWare.

While not as long as Mad Dog McCree, which was released with its sequel at retail earlier this year, Fast Draw Showdown specializes in, well, fast draws. You go up against numerous opponents for quick shoot outs, getting more difficult with each villian.

In a world where Wild Gunman won't ever be released on the Virtual Console, this might be your best bet to see if you're the rootinest, tootinest quick draw in the wild west.

The game is set to be released on January 5th on WiiWare in the US, with other releases to follow.

DSiWare: Trailer: The Oregon Trail DSiWare (Gameloft)

While the game popped up earlier this week for DSiWare, I thought we should have a good look at this new DSiWare version of The Oregon Trail.

Based on the 1971 educational classic The Oregon Trail. Probably best known for the 1982 Apple II version, the game sets the player off to guide settlers from Missouri to Oregon in his wagon. The game recently became popular thanks to nerditry on the internet, and since then Gameloft developed a iPhone version of the game, which this version is based off of.

The game now includes numerous mini games - finding gold, fishing and more. It seems well suited for those of you who remember the original fondly, while also catering for newcomers.

The game is available through the DSiWare store for 800 Points, with a European release to follow.

XBLA: XBLA Update - The Maw Is The Deal Of The Week, Castle Crashers Is Deal Of The Day, No New Release This Week

themawcheap.jpg

In an odd turn of events, there will be no new release for the Xbox Live Arcade this week. Admittedly it's a horribly time of year to release anything, and honestly - who's going to pay attention to something this week? Certainly not PR companies - they're off on their holidays.

This time of year has usually been left to games like SpongeBob SquarePants: Underpants Slam and Merv Griffin's Crosswords and Puzzle Arcade - while not specifically bad games, they're games Microsoft know that their audience isn't particularly jumping for. What sort of crazy company would release a retail game this year, honestly?

There is a few awesome deals though - The Maw is now available this week for just 400 Points to Gold members, and for today only Castle Crashers is 560MSP - more than half off. Go grab it now.

The next two weeks include Matt Hazard: Blood Bath and Beyond and Serious Sam HD, so there's something to look forward to in the future.

PSN: Thexder Neo Coming To PS3

Back when Thexder Neo appeared on the ESRB list it suggested it would be coming to PSP and PS3, but we never heard anything more specific or confirmed about the PS3 version. Now the Square Enix Facebook page has revealed it is still coming - it's just not complete yet.

Square Enix's downloadable games division has been having a fair amount of fun over at their facebook page, and have revealed the game is still coming to the PS3. It will include updated "PS3 graphics" and will be available in 2010. Hopefully the online modes are kept intact in the console transition.

DSiWare, WiiWare: EU Nintendo Update - Tomena Sanner, Dragon's Lair And More

tomena.jpg

A few good releases this week for both Wii and DSi owners - no surprises though, that would have been nice for a end-of-year celebration.

WiiWare this week gets the insanely weird Tomena Sanner for 500 Points and mole-whacking game Happy Hammerin', also for 500 Points.

DSiWare is headlined by Dragon's Lair for 800 Points, High Stakes Texas Hold'em> for 500 Points and Miami Nights for 800 Points.

DSiWare: Let's Golf Coming To DSiWare

letsgolfdsiware.jpg

Gameloft's popular Let's Golf series is now coming to DSiWare, according to the ESRB.

The golf game has become quite popular on the iPhone, and was recently released as a mini on the PlayStation Network. There was no standard mobile release of the game, so this will be the first low-poly version of the game.

While it's easy to brush of Let's Golf as being a boring news story, there hasn't been a good golf game on the DS for a while now. Nintendo are releasing an express version of Nintendo Touch Golf sometime next year (already available in Europe), the original wasn't that well received, and there hasn't been a Tiger Woods DS game for over two years now.

This might actually be the DS golf game to get for for 2010. That is unless Camelot make a sequel to Mario Golf: Advance Tour, but we can only dream.

DSiWare: New Details For Legends of Exidia Emerge

gameloftexidia.jpg

We've been keeping an eye on Gameloft's Legends of Exidia since it popped up on German rating boards, but now the ESRB has updated with a description of the game.

Legends of Exidia is an action RPG where you play as Luis, a hero on a quest to stop a force threatening the kingdom of Exidia. Much like Zelda, players will run through villages, forest and castles in a slightly overhead perspective, and the player will use magic, swords and other instruments to defeat orcs and dragons.

With the ESRB also describes a battle with a dragon, with the end result having to chop of its head. You will also encounter some half-woman/half-spider character which has a very revealing dress - but holds back enough to get an E10+ rating.

As a unique DSiWare title it sounds great - all we need now is for Gameloft to actually show the game. The game sounds a lot darker than a Zelda title, but we've no idea of its graphical design. We've been trying to contact Gameloft about it, but they to tend to be a stubborn bunch.

The game is expected to be released in Q1,so there's not much time before it'll pop up. While it's currently DSiWare only, we think it likely that it'll also be on iPhone and PSP Minis sometime in the future.
