WiiWare: Last Flight's Episodic Adventure Coming This Year

Last_Flight_ss01.jpg

It appears that Telltale aren't the only development house to try and make episodic WiiWare games - Bloober Team are working hard on Last Flight.

You play Larry, a poor fellow that just happened to be on the same flight as a not-so-dead Vampire in the cargo hold. Through the 4 separate episodes you'll be hacking and slashing your way through enemies using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. The developers have emphasized the "adventure" part of the package, which means the game might have more than one might see based on the screenshots.

The cell-shaded graphics look very nice, certainly better than most WiiWare titles. The first episode is set to come out later this year - but will the game be able to keep the gameplay fresh over 4 episodes? Guess we'll have to wait and see.

XBLA: In-Depth: Xbox Live Arcade Sales Analysis, September 2009

xblatop10sept.png[GamerBytes editor Ryan Langley examines September 2009's Xbox Live Arcade debuts and continuing successes, with charts and leaderboard data -- to find out what digital XBLA titles are flourishing into the Autumn.]

Over the past year we’ve been looking at Xbox Live Arcade sales charts. At first, we would analyze the weekly Xbox Live Arcade lists -- and then we started looking at the Leaderboards over a four week period. But starting this month we’re taking it one step further – by bringing both together.

By attempting to extrapolate from both the Leaderboard data and the weekly Top 10 lists, we can at least estimate what XBLA titles sold that month – including games like Battlefield 1943 and Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, which do not show the overall player count on Leaderboards.

In the future we will be expanding our scope, continuing our research on these titles we have here -- but also many of the XBLA titles that have been released over the past year and beyond. Not all games can be followed like we’ve been doing here, but we continue to do the best we can.

In any case, 11 new Xbox Live Arcade titles were released within the 5 weeks of September 2009, and while some games did remarkably well, others that we tracked were not so lucky. This is the Top 10 games per week, as announced by the Major Nelson Top 10:

WiiWare: First Screens Of Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth Emerge

castlevaniarebirthscans.jpg

The latest issue of Famitsu Magazine has revealed the first information of Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth, a dramatically overhauled version of the original Gameboy game.

The game has now been given a big graphics upgrade, now looking much closer to Super Castlevania IV on the Super Nintendo. Calling it just a remake isn't giving the game justice - it's been completely redone.

Just from the screenshots you can see numerous Skeletons and flights of stairs to walk up - neither of which were in Castlevania: The Adventure. Going by this play through video, I couldn't see any level design that resembled anything in the screenshots, so this is more of a re-imagining. The only object I could recognize from both games is the rolling eyeballs, in which there are a whole lot more of them in the WiiWare release.

The game is set to be released in Japan on October 27th, and will cost 1,000 Nintendo Points. I expect the game to appear in North America later on.

PSN, XBLA: Lead & Gold Shoots From The Hip

New developer Fatshark are looking to break into the digital realm with a new team-based multiplayer game. The twist? It's set in the wild west.

Lead & Gold is a 3rd person shooter developed in the now defunct GRIN's engine - FatShark was in fact a splinter group from this developer before it went under. It's team based and, from the video, appears to have classes such as a Snipers (Trapper) and Engineers (Blaster) alongside your standard Cowboy fare - quite reminiscent of Team Fortress 2.

To change things up a bit, numerous stats change depending on which team mates you're close to. An example given is the female Trapper class, which will increase your chance of a critical hit if you fight alongside her.

From the above video we can see a "Steal / Defend the gold" mode is in place, but its unknown whether this is a Capture the Flag mode or a Control Point style map - hopefully it'll include both.

While there are a number of multiplayer shooters already out there few of them mix 3rd person shooting with a class based affair - and they're certainly not set in the wild west. While the game is not officially coming to the PlayStation Network or Xbox Live Arcade the developers are strongly hinting at it - so look out for the official announcement soon.

XBLA: Indie Watch: Weapon Of Choice Lowers Price

weaponofchoicebargain.jpg

Nathan Fouts' top rating Indie Game Weapon Of Choice has dropped its price from its original 400MSP ($5) price point to the now affordable 240MSP ($3).

When the game came out last year it defined the Xbox Live Indie experience - a little title with a unique art style and enough replay value to keep you coming back for more. If you've never picked it up before, I suggest you give the trial a go now.

DSiWare: Dragon's Lair Coming To DSiWare

dragonlairdsi.png

After some middling with dull WiiWare titles like Word Searcher, Digital Leisure is going into the back catalog, and serving up some Dragon's Lair on DSiWare.

That is, according to the German USK rating system, which recently rated the old FMV action-puzzler for the system. Recently its sequel Space Ace popped up on the iPhone app store and took up a jaunty 243MB - I wonder if Dragon's Lair can make the journey to DSiWare while sticking to the 20-40MB size limit?

XBLA: XBL Indie Watch - Go! Go! Ninja Bros

ninjabrosindie.png

Indie Developer Dot Zo Games have been pushing out a few Xbox Live Indie Games over the past couple of months - but today's release truly shines above the rest.

Ninja Bros. is a platforming puzzle game that involves, obviously, Ninjas. Four colored Ninjas live in their own little worlds - the twist being that you control all Ninjas on the screen at the same time, requiring you to push buttons and jump around in the right order to get each Ninja to their exit door.

The easy and normal levels are very fun, but at hard and extreme difficulties it gets quite brutal. For only 80 Microsoft Points ($1) it's worth just giving it a go.

Click here to add Ninja Bros. trial to your queue via Xbox web marketplace.

The developer also created a freeware game titled Journey to the Center of the Earth , or Underground Go! last month. Sister site IndieGames gave it a look a few weeks ago, and while it's somewhat novel that it uses a strange resolution, I hope it also comes over to the Xbox Live Indie Games in some fashion too.

DSiWare: Viking Invasion Out This Week In Europe

We're usually frustrated when developers don't officially announce their games before they come out, but thanks to an early leak of this week's releases, we can actually discuss the game before it comes out.

Viking Invasion is a Tower Defense game for DSiWare by small French developer BIP Studios. You place your various towers around a river of oncoming Viking ships and Norse Gods. In essence, it's a direct ripoff of 7 Cities on the iPhone but going by the website's Flash demo, it's still a decent Tower Defense game, and the first for DSiWare.

Now can you European developers start officially announcing your game before it comes out, pretty please? I would like to talk about your games sometimes.

PSN, XBLA: Madden NFL Arcade Hits In December, First Screens

10.8.168.133-image189_bmp_jpgcopy.jpg

Back in August the topic of a Madden NFL Arcade game popped up in an earnings report, now the game has officially been announced, and the first screens are here.

The game is a 5-on-5 version of NFL Football, and is being developed by EA Tiburon. In the game you'll be able to choose one of 32 NFL teams and battle it out against other players with no penalties or field goals allowed, and the first team to 30 points wins the game.

The game will support four player games on the same console, and will have the ability to play online head-to-head against another player. Much like 3-on-3 NHL Arcade, the game will include numerous power-ups, or "Game Changers" as they call them, which will let you freeze opponents, turn off their passing icons and much more.

Best of all is that the game looks great, just check out all these screenshots. I'm thankful that they appear to have chosen the choice of team over the choice of players - a decision which made no sense on NHL Arcade.

The game will be out in December for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, and will be available for 1200MSP, or $14.99.

WiiWare: Raving Rabbids To Get Applikation für WiiWare

RABBIDSwiiware.jpgAccording to the German USK rating system, Ubisoft are currently working on an Applikation für Wii-Ware for the upcoming Rabbids Go Home game.

While the rating has since been taken down, German website Nintendo-Power De happened to nab a copy of the text. Unfortunately nothing else can be deciphered from its description. I wonder what it could possibly be?

top10sept09psn.png[In this article, Ryan Langley examines the performance of September 2009's PlayStation Network debuts, including Turtles In Time and Zombie Apocalypse alongside PSOne Classics like Silent Hill and Final Fantasy Tactics]

"In Multiplayer, you can work with friends to maintain the steam machine. When you play with two, three or four players, the screen is divided into sections with different background colours. Thwart all your assailant's ruses and unlock new kinds of buildings. Can you rise to the challenge and prevent Olaf from pillaging all your valuables for his sweetheart Olga?"

XBLA: Platypus Clay Shooter Coming To XBL Indie Games

Escapist Games have revealed that they're bringing clay shooter Platypus to Xbox Live Indie Games, and with a slew of new features.

The original Platypus was made by Anthony Flack, who's currently working on Cletus Clay for Xbox Live Arcade. Platypus also had a bit of a strange and crazy history, which any new developer should take into account when selling your games to a publisher.

This new version will feature HD widescreen presentation, improved audio and collision, several extras along with translation into several different languages. This version will also be the best for cooperative play, since you can play on the same screen with separate controllers.

The game is currently very close to release, and should be out in the next week or so. In the meantime, check out this new trailer.

DSiWare: Have A Globulos Party On Your DSi

globulosparty.png

Web developer GlobZ have now revealed that their popular web game Globolus will be coming to DSiWare, complete with all the turn-based sports you'll ever need.

Globulus Party is a mixture of 20 different mini-games, ranging from Arena, Football, Croquet, Darts and Ice Hockey over 50 different playing fields, the twist being is that you must fling your rotund team mates around the field using the stylus.

Each turn has players choose the direction and speed that they want their Globolus to move in, once each player has made their decisions, the game flings the characters around until they're at a complete stop again. You'll use this to bump players off the board, push balls into goals and so forth.

The game will support DSi download play, single system hotseat and online wireless play. The game should be coming fairly soon, but in the meantime check out the web version of the game to see how it plays for yourself.
