XBLA: Rainbow Islands XBLA Supports Avatars, Online Play

When Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure was released on WiiWare earlier this year, a lot of people were miffed with the new designs for Bubby & Bobby. Instead of these little fat kids jumping around we had these much taller, lanky kids throwing rainbows everything. We may now know the reason for it - the Avatars are playable in the Xbox Live Arcade version.

The Xbox.com splash page for Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure has recently popped up - and despite that we've spoken about the game, the XBLA version is still technically unannounced. In the first screenshots of the game it shows off the ability to choose your Avatar as one of the costumes for your player. Avatars have very similar height to the new Bubby & Bobby, which may have been a reason behind their redesign.

The splash page also reveals that the game includes online multiplayer - something missing from the Bubble Bobble release this week. However it appears the cooperative mode is local only, but you can play the race mode online. The WiiWare version also only had 7 areas to play, while the splash page claims the XBLA version has 10 areas.

The WiiWare version got some lackluster reviews, so I wouldn't expect this to have a lot of differences. If you're hankering for a new Rainbow Islands though, this might be the version to pick up.
