PSN, PSN Minis, WiiWare, XBLA: EarthWorm Jim HD Developed From The Ground Up, Includes Special Edition Features

earthwormjimcomparison.jpg

Gameloft revealed their plans to bring EarthWorm Jim back to the digital distribution services last month. To know more about the remake of EarthWorm Jim we contacted and spoke to a Gameloft representative and asked them a couple of questions.

We can reveal that EarthWorm Jim will be based on the Sega Genesis version of the game, but is being reworked completely from scratch without the original game's code. The game will be enhanced from the original game, featuring better graphics, smoother animations and will feature several difficulty levels - something not in the original.

While there are no screenshots of the console version of the game, there are a few iPhone screenshots floating around. The above image showcases the difference between the original and the iPhone remake, so we can hopefully expect that much care and dedication to the original game to flow through the rest of the remake.

Gameloft are also aware of the chronology of Earthworm Jim. The Special Edition, released on the Sega CD and PC, had an additional level called "Big Bruty". We can now confirm that the game will include this level.

The game will use leaderboards to track killed enemies, total time, and several other statistics. They also stated there will be "some surprises, which will be revealed later".

When asked whether the original team, such as Dave Perry nor Doug Nepal, are involved in the project, Gameloft responded with a no - however the game will contain the original music created by Tommy Tallarico.

As for the Wii version, the game is being developed by one of Gameloft's many development studios, and have several production teams working to maintain consistency between the platforms. The graphics are "optimized for each platform", so WiiWare fans won't be losing anything but a bit of resolution.

Finally, we asked whether there was a chance of Earthworm Jim coming to the PSP, as the game was announced a few days before PSP minis were revealed. Gameloft are "considering" bringing Earthwom Jim to the PSP at a later date, but are currently working on numerous other PSP minis titles.

Earthworm Jim will be released later this year, with a one-month exclusivity period for the Xbox Live Arcade version.

PSN: Colosseum Devs Announce Alive & Undead For PSN

aliveandundeadwhat.jpg

Shortfuse Games have announced that they have become official developers for the PlayStation Network, and their next title - Alive & Undead - will be heading there next year.

These Swedesh developers previously released Colosseum for Xbox Live Indie Games, and had done well on the service. Alive & Undead is a side scrolling 2D cooperative brawler / shooter where you play as an Elvis Impersonating Vampire or a witch hunter. Sure.

No screenshots yet but they do have this delightful teaser site. The game is set for a 2010 release.

PSN, XBLA: Say Hello To Joe Danger

joedanger.jpg

Hello Games, a tiny studio in the middle of the UK, have revealed their first title - Joe Danger, will be coming to digital platforms.

The game, obviously, stars Joe Danger, an Evil Knievel style stunt man who loves to show off. The game itself is perhaps a little similar to Trials HD in concept, but takes a far more cartoony approach to the.. well, can we call it a genre?

You'll be flying across the screen from left to right in your stunt bike, but unlike Trials, which is set more around the time trial rather than the points, Joe Danger will be attempting tricks, collecting coings, jumping on springs and perhaps more importantly - several multiplayer modes.

Joe Danger is currently looking at getting onto the Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and PC, which usually means they're still going through the approval process for the game to get onto either system. Like what you see? Follow them on Twitter or check out their blog, and show your interest to the world so they can get a shot at either system.

XBLA: XBLA Deals Of The Week For October - Jewel Quest, Golf: Tee It Up

dotwoctober.jpg

[Update: The dates have now changed. Buku Sudoku was a Japanese only promotion this week due to the Guitar Hero DLC being on special. See notes]

Microsoft appear to have gotten the message - people want Xbox Live Arcade games in their Deals of The Week. After a month with 4 games at cut prices, October plans to continue the trend with 2 more.

Jewel Quest was the 18th game made available for Xbox Live Arcade, way back in March 2006. On October 12th [Was 19th] the game will drop from 800MSP to 400MSP. It's a different take on the Match-3 game style, but be warned - the game has certainly not aged well in terms of XBLA games, it looks rough just in terms of overall presentation, but it's still a decent puzzle game.

Finally on the 19th [Was 26th] Golf: Tee It Up will drop from 800MSP to 400MSP for that week. It's a solid Golf game created by Indie darlings Housemarque. I just wish they kept adding more courses, or did the smart thing of making Avatars playable.

Alongside the XBLA releases the Prince of Persia Epilogue DLC will be on sale for the week of October 5th [Was 12th], and will cost 560MSP instead of 800MSP, further showing publishers complete reluctance to drop anything not XBLA to the magical 50% mark.

XBLA: Atlus Brings Zeno Clash To Xbox Live Arcade

zenoclashxbla.jpg

Atlus have revealed today that they will be bringing the critically acclaimed first person combat game Zeno Clash to the Xbox Live Arcade in 2010, and will include numerous additions that were not in the original PC release.

Zeno Clash: Ultimate Edition, developed by ACE Team, has a fantastically surreal art style that doesn't look like anything that came before it, and will fit into the Xbox Live Arcade's portfolio very nicely. This game was also developed on the Source engine, much like Portal: Still Alive, so it should take little development time to get the game running up to speed on the system.

Some new additions to the game include a new cooperative mode for the Tower Challenges in the game, which sounds a little more like the many wave modes you're now seeing in retail games. There are more improvements also being worked on, which will be revealed at a later date.

Now Atlus, what's going on with Trine on Xbox Live Arcade? We haven't heard from you in a while...

PSN, XBLA: Matt Hazard: Blood Bath and Beyond Announced For XBLA, PSN

mhbbb-scrn-090930-13.jpg

Eat Lead: The Return Of Matt Hazzard was released earlier this year with some poor reception, but D3 will continue on the name with a new title, a side-scrolling shooter set for Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network.

Matt Hazard: Blood Bath and Beyond appears to be similar to the recent hit Shadow Complex, but more level based rather than being an open ended map.

The game is being developed by Vicious Cycle who made the original Matt Hazzard game, so until we see some video footage I'm left quite skeptical. The screenshots do look great though, and do show some novel parody situations, like the Mirror's Edge level above.

I'm all for 2D action games, and if this can stand up to the various other action games on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, good on them - we'll see if it does in 2010.

XBLA: XBL Indie Watch - Arkedo Series 01 - JUMP

arkedojump.jpg

Arkedo Studio, a small french developer, have made a name for themselves with two previous titles on the Nintendo DS - Nervous Brickdown and Big Bang Mini. Now they've decided to give the digital distribution thing a go with a series of titles for the Xbox Live Indie Games scene - starting with JUMP.

Arkedo Series 01 - JUMP is a simple platformer, but just happens to have a fantastic art direction. The goal is simple - collect bombs, avoid obstacles and get to the exit in time, all with an over saturated 8-Bit art style with Commodore 64-esque music blaring in the background.

It's a great platformer, and for only 240MSP ($3) it's a steal. I would say my only issue is that you can't save at any point - you run out of lives, you start right from the beginning again. While this was chosen by the developers ("Retro games didn't have continues!") it still would have been a nice addition.

Click here to download the game via Xbox web marketplace.

XBLA: A Look At Axel & Pixel

Axel & Pixel was revealed just a few weeks ago, and while the official website gave us a little bit of insight into the gameplay we weren't that sure what we were up for.

Now with the new trailer we're now seeing what sort of puzzles you'll be up against - connecting pipes, building Tetris pyramids, using a golf ball air balloon and driving a monster truck - a large variety of things to figure out and conquer.

The best part seems that it's just so darn charming, watching Axel and his dog Pixel jump around talking simlish and being just as fascinated with the world as the player is. There's nothing like it on XBLA, PSN or WiiWare - and that's just enough of a reason to check it out.

The game's set to be released on October 14th, so it's not too long before we get our hands on it.
