PSN, PSN Minis: Square-Enix Revives Thexder For New PS3 / PSP Game

Square Enix plans to release a ton of Xbox Live Arcade titles in the next year - not to mention all of their Taito titles, but they're not leaving the PlayStation Network in the dust -they're reviving an old classic Thexder for PS3 and PSP, according to the ESRB.

Thexder NEO is a maze game with a laser shooting robot that can turn into a Jet. It was a very popular game in Japan back on the MSX computer - it was published by Square and was Game Arts first developed game. It was then released on the NES and many other systems through Game Arts and Sierra and even got a sequel - Fire Hawk for the MSX2 and DOS platforms.

Since a semi remake released in 1995 by Sierra the license has remained dormant until now. I will be interesting to see how the game will be received 20 years after the original game. The game had a shooting element, but the aiming was all automatic - I'd say a twin stick style might be good now, but it's coming on the PSP as well - so it's not a very good option. Perhaps it will go over the top, Bangai-O style, or maybe like Turrican?

What say you readers? Should the game keep the same shooting style, or try something new?

What are the XBLA games they announced? I missed that and can't seem to find much about it... :/

I think they should keep it similar to the original formula, as it was a very interesting game.

Square Enix have got a few nutty XBLA games in the works - 0-Day Attack on Earth and Death by Cube.

Taito's doing ports of their WiiWare titles, as well as Qix++ and RayStorm HD :)

I'd like to see them try the Metroidvania style for this one. The morph schtick already fits the frame, all it needs is a gentle prod in the right direction, I believe.
