PSN, PSN Minis: Document Reveals PSP Minis Developer Guidelines

pspminis1.jpg

With the announcement of the PSP minis program early last week it's been an interesting look at the now large variety of digital download avenues now available to Indie developers - but we stil don't know a whole lot about it. Today PocketGamer came across a "Level 2 Confidential" document from Sony Entertainment Europe's licensing website TPRnet revealing details on the intent of the PSP minis program and what developers will be dealing with.

Let's have a look, step by step:

There is no requirement for content approval

For some time it's been known that the PlayStation Network has been keeping a tight leash around concept approval. Sometimes in the most bizarre circumstances - such as Sony Europe approving of Outrun Online Arcade while Sony of America passed on it. Now it seems that Sony Europe will not be doing such a thing, and will instead let the buyers decide.

This could be a good and bad thing - on one hand a lot of smaller developers who don't have the pull of a large publisher can get their game on the marketplace - on the other hand it could mean a lot of awful games could come to the platform. Going by the current list it doesn't seem to be much of a problem though.

As this is a SCEE document it is unknown whether this is the same for the American arm of SCE.

SCEE is ‘open for business’ and looking for minis developers right now

With the list of PSP mini games showing off the variety of publishers and developers, Sony continues to bring more to the table - simply register your company on SCEE's TPRnet website.

Quality Assurance (QA) is transparent, trackable and predictable

On the PlayStation 3 it's been difficult to see where a game is during certification - "Dude, where's Fat Princess?!" and so forth. Now Sony appears to be streamlining the process a little more, allowing developers to see their updates somewhat on the fly. They also expect the time taken for the QA process to be much shorter - but I'd imagine they're assuming that the PSP mini system doesn't become ar large as the iPhone platform, which tends to take weeks to a month before being made available.

SCEE offers monthly revenue, no penalties for minimum sales, no quota of games on publisher, no bandwidth charges

Publishers will receive their earnings made on a monthly basis - much like how the PSN already operates. However they've also made it clear that there will be no penalties for minimum sales - it was revealed some months ago that WiiWare developers will not get any money unless they reach a certain threshold in sales.

There is also no quota for the amount of games being released through a publisher. The Xbox Live Arcade had (or has) some policies regarding how many games a publisher could release a month - Sierra during its prime was releasing a game a month. With no quota you could see a company like Gameloft or Sega release several games in a month.

It was also revealed that games, demos, and anything on the PlayStation Network required a 16 cents fee per gigabyte of data - this will not be the case for PSP mini games.

Publisher retains control of release dates

Currently Microsoft keeps a tight leash on when new Xbox Live Arcade titles are released - it's not due to any real draconian policy - it's that the Wednesday only release style has now become overly cramped. It appears that publishers will have complete control for the PSP mini games - whether that means they can release a game on any day of the week, ala iPhone games, or whether they can choose the specific Thursday to be released with the PlayStation Store update, it unclear.

The current price for a PSP™ Development Tool is €1200

Earlier this year PSP development kit prices were slashed by 80% - we can now reveal that it only costs €1200 (likely $1200USD) to get a PSP development kit. In comparison iPhone SDK and XNA Indie Games simply require the $99 subscription fee, but in the case of the iPhone a Macintosh Computer is also required. Either way it's an incredibly good price for small developers to get in on the action.

You can read the document for yourself if you wish. It's still uncertain if the games will be based on any price tier system or whether or not seperate submissions per region is required - you may have noticed that all PR for PSP minis have been directly from SCEE while SCEA haven't said a word.

XBLA: Indie Watch - Deadline A Go! And Z0MB1ES!!!1

gozombies.jpg

While there have been a large amount of new Xbox Indie Games out this week, two have been the standout titles - I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1 and Deadline A Go!

Z0MB1ES is the newest game by Jamezila, creator of ZP2K9 and The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai. This title is a very simple twin stick shooter. It's very simple but is fun - but it's main draw is the bizarre song playing throughout the game. The game is only 80MSP ($1) and supports 4 player cooperative play. Check out the video of it below, or download the trial here.

Deadline A Go! is a Desktop Tower Defense game in the style that Crystal Defenders followed - a strict line where you must place game developers around the office as as they battle the oncoming onslaught of game bugs! The game is unfortunately all in Japanese, so it's a little difficult to understand what everything is, but if the developer Zenryokutei can get himself some fellows to translate the game, I would grab it. Download the trial here.

PSN, PSN Minis, WiiWare: First Trailer For UNO DSiWare, Supports DSi Camera

Gameloft have revealed the first trailer for the DSiWare version of UNO, coming to the system sometime next month.

The game will feature online play as well as the local single and multiplayer modes. It will also use the Nintendo DSi's camera in order to create a small icon of your face. The Wii version, seen here, will feature Miis. What the PlayStation Network and PSP minis versions will support (camera? icon edit?) is currently unknown.

DSiWare, WiiWare: Furry Legends Coming To DSiWare

dsiwarefurry.jpgPolish developer Gamelion studios have revealed that their IP Furry Legends, coming to WiiWare sometime this year, will be making its DSi debut.

It was revealed through their twitter page that Furry Legends has just been approved by Nintendo. How similar it'll be to the WiiWare version is unknown, but it now looks like the DSi has it's own Loco Roco competitor.

The game is set to be released in Q2 2010.

XBLA: Axel & Pixel Heading To XBLA?

2kcze.jpgIt appears that 2K Games are further attempting to get into the realm of digital downloads - but instead of dealing with sport games they're planning on... a point and click adventure?

Both the ESRB and OFLC rating boards have updated with the game being present. The ESRB describes the game as a game where players "guide an artist and his dog through surreal and abstract environments". Players will solve puzzles by using objects, such as mirrors and rocks, to continue through the game.

The game is being developed by 2K CZECH, who are currently hard at work on Mafia II. The OFLC states the game is being developed by Silver Wish Games, a studio which was a part of the 2K buyout of Illusion Softworks, who are now 2K Czech.

[Update: 2K Czech have revealed that Silver Wish Games are an internal studio in Czech, but are not the developers of Mafia II]

Nothing else is known currently - but the premise is at least promising. Look for more information in the future.

PSN, PSN Minis: Square-Enix Revives Thexder For New PS3 / PSP Game

thexderwhat.png

Square Enix plans to release a ton of Xbox Live Arcade titles in the next year - not to mention all of their Taito titles, but they're not leaving the PlayStation Network in the dust -they're reviving an old classic Thexder for PS3 and PSP, according to the ESRB.

Thexder NEO is a maze game with a laser shooting robot that can turn into a Jet. It was a very popular game in Japan back on the MSX computer - it was published by Square and was Game Arts first developed game. It was then released on the NES and many other systems through Game Arts and Sierra and even got a sequel - Fire Hawk for the MSX2 and DOS platforms.

Since a semi remake released in 1995 by Sierra the license has remained dormant until now. I will be interesting to see how the game will be received 20 years after the original game. The game had a shooting element, but the aiming was all automatic - I'd say a twin stick style might be good now, but it's coming on the PSP as well - so it's not a very good option. Perhaps it will go over the top, Bangai-O style, or maybe like Turrican?

What say you readers? Should the game keep the same shooting style, or try something new?

XBLA: Toe Jam & Earl Wins XBLA Poll

toejamearlwins.jpgThe compeittion for the next Sega XBLA game is over- Toe Jam & Earl is now the winner, by a fairly large margin.

The game will appear on XBLA sometime in the future - well after their XBLA version of Sonic & Knuckles is released I imagine. like other Sega Vintage Collection games, expect the game to also have online multiplayer - probably the major reason why it won.

Hopefully with Backbone Entertainment now being well versed in online multiplayer with Street Fighter II HD and Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 that they'll be able to do the game a proper update. I also hope they find some way to save and resume online multiplayer games - the likelyhood of people completely finishing TJ&E in one sitting is quite small I'd wager.

XBLA: This Week On XBLA - Invincible Tiger, Watchmen Part 2, NBA 2K10 Draft Combine

handthaologo.jpg

"Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao is the first 3-D kung fu game on Xbox LIVE Arcade and the ideal game for fans of martial arts movies and classic beat-'em-up action games. "It's June 1977, and any day now the passage of the Keene Act will outlaw all masked vigilantes not sanctioned by the government. Rorschach has uncovered a mysterious missing person's case. Together with the help of Nite Owl, the pair has set out to find the young girl in Watchmen: The End is Nigh Part 2. Their search takes them deep into the depraved, sleazy corners of the city, and eventually face-to-face with the mysterious Twilight Lady. The seedy underbelly of New York beckons … will you take the call?"

XBLA: PopCap Bring Plants Vs. Zombies To XBLA, But Where's The Rest?

zombook.jpg

PopCap revealed, very quietly mind you, that Plants Vs. Zombies is currently in development for the Xbox Live Arcade. Their hit PC and Mac game will also be coming to the iPhone.

If it's anything like the the Peggle XBLA game it will likely come with some additional features, like online multiplayer as well as online Leaderboards. I'd also imagine that the game will require some major rethinking as the "sun power" pickups require clicking, but I'm sure they'll manage something.

But the question I have is, what about everything else? It's been nearly a year since PopCap released Bejeweled Twist on the PC, and they've also released Bookworm Adventures 2, a game with no prior XBLA version outside of the one on the original Xbox, and announced Zuma's Revenge for next month. There has also been absolutely no DLC for Peggle despite now being 200,000 players strong.

PopCap aren't one to sit on their hands, but surely they're up to something for these franchises on XBLA. It's like they don't want money!

DSiWare: Nintendo To Entice Developers For DSiWare?

dsiwareicons.jpgWith the announcement of PSP minis last week, it appears that Nintendo might be trying to sweeten the deal for developers looking into DSiWare, according to Pocket Gamer.

This new initiative will supposedly make it easier for developers to get into DSiWare titles, and will continue to use the currently 200, 500 and 800 Nintendo Point price ranges, but will also reward developers who make a game that is less than 20MB with a smaller royalty fee.

It's an initiative I see as trying to get more new games onto the service. It's unfortunately that the majority of DSi software has either been cut down versions of retail NDS games (Brain Training) or the equivalent of retail titles entirely (Real Football 2009), but I would also imagine that most DSiWare titles aren't even close to 20MB, so I don't really see how it'll change anything.

Will it help? Who knows - but for the sake of the DSiWare store let us hope it does.

XBLA: Massive Free Update For Death Tank - 13 New Weapons!

Surprise! Death Tank, one of my favourite Xbox live Arcade titles, has just recieved a big, free update featuring 13 new weapons and 10 new, unlockable tank designs.

The update marks the return of some classic weapons from the original Death Tank, such as the Air Strike (a big bombing run) and the hover coil (hover around the screen and annoy your mates), and also brings a ton of new ones too.

Do you like rolling mines? Why not try the rolling NUKE? Stuck in a corner? Why the teleporter is just the thing you're looking for. Guy too hard to hit? Give the orbital laser a shot.

You can also check out the 10 new tanks, which are unlocked by getting certain ranks among your friends, or if you win against the developers in their new weekly competitions!

Remember - this update is completely free, and if you'd like to give the game another shot, remember - the online is free in the trial version for up to an hour!

You can check out all the details for the new update at Flat Games' website. Go and download the trial version here, and get ready for action.

XBLA: Indie Watch: Kunio Series Returns With Downtown Smash Dodgeball

dodgeball.jpg

"Kunio" is a classic set of old games made by Technos, including old NES titles like River City Ransom and Super Dodgeball. Early last year it was revealed that a little Japanese indie company Miracle Kidz were working with the original creators of Famicom Kunio titles to create some Kunio fangames. One of them was Downtown Dodgeball, a remake of sorts for Super Dodgeball on the NES and SNES.

Now Miracle Kidz have ported the game over entirely with Downtown Smash Dodgeball, now available on XBL Indie Games. The game is currently sporting an 800MSP price point (which will have to go down in price in October) but the game looks and feels just like the original games, only a lot smoother and in high definition.

Check out the trial version here, or see a video of the PC game in action here. For the official website, jump over to this link.

PSN Minis: Crystal Defenders Bound For PSP Minis

crystaldefenderspspminis.jpgIt looks like Fieldrunners won't be the only Desktop Tower Defense game coming to the PSP mini - Square Enix are also on board, bringing their popular Crystal Defenders to the PSP, according to the German USK rating system.

This is likely a port of the iPhone version of Crystal Defenders, which itself was ported to the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network earlier this year, but sans Trophies or Achievements.

WiiWare: NinjaBee Return To WiiWare With The Amazing Brain Train!

the-amazing-brain-train_200x200.jpgNinjaBee have kept fairly quiet this year with their only releases being an expansion pack for Band Of Bugs and an iPhone version of Kalioki Adventure, but today they've announced their first foray into publishing on WiiWare - The Amazing Brain Train.

Many of you are likely groaning at the name - it is a collection of 15 thinking minigames after all - but The Amazing Brain Train was a contestant for the PAX 10 award back in 2008 alongside XBLA's The Maw, so if the Penny Arcade guys can see some good in this I'm giving the benefit of the doubt. Originally developed by Grubby Games, NinjaBee will be porting and publishing the game on WiIWare.

XBLA: XBLA Get Peggle Nights Soon Through DLC

pegglenightsdlc.jpg

Just a few days after I was whinging about the lack of more Peggle - more Peggle arrives! PopCap have revealed that the full Peggle Nights PC title will become available through DLC for Peggle XBLA this fall.

The Peggle Nights DLC will feature all 60 new boards, 60 new challenges and the new Peggle master Marina. It will come with 3 new achievements for a total of 50 extra Gamerscore.

The game will also see a title update which adds new style shots from Nights into the main game, and feature all the additional content the XBLA version provides, such as multiplayer.

The only thing we don't know is the price - realistically PopCap could sell this for an additional 800MSP as it is a full sequel to the original. 600 maybe? A generous 400? What would you pay for more Peggle?

XBLA: 2K Picks Up P.B. Winterbottom For Xbox Live Arcade

pjwinter.jpg

We spoke of 2K Games bringing indie-sounding Axel & Pixel to the Xbox Live Arcade, and now it appears that they're continuing on the same notion by revealing that P.B. Winterbottom is coming to the Xbox Live Arcade in early 2010.

P.B. Winterbottom is a silent movie star and has a love for pie - but he's willing to break through time and space to get more pie.

The game uses mechanics similar to Braid's 'time double' puzzles - various pies can cause Winterbottom to create doubles of himself to open doors or use them as platforms to grab more pie, but has the level structure of N+ or Scribblenauts.

Confusing? Just watch this trailer, or watch the old 1UP Show crew play the game here.

The game was considered for many awards at E3 2008's Indiecade, and will be fleshed out from its original prototype to feature over 80 levels.

XBLA: Indie Watch: New Trailer For Grapple Buggy

Shadow Complex is pretty big right now, but what are you going to do for your Metroidvania fix afterward? You'll need to check out Grapple Buggy.

This new trailer shows off the game's storyline, which Nathan Fouts tells us will be fully voiced. The game is slated for Xbox Live (Arcade or Indie, it's all still on the table) in 2010.

XBLA: Death Rally Encarnate - Scrap Metal Announced For XBLA

Slick Entertainment, the development team behind N+ for the Xbox Live Arcade, have announced their newest title Scrap Metal for the Xbox Live Arcade.

Scrap Metal is in essence Super Off Road but with guns - or more specifically the old Apogee game Death Rally, which can only be a good thing.

This two man team (two people? crazy...) are hard at work on this game right now, and will be showing off the game at the Penny Arcade Expo at booth #3106, so if you're going next weekend give the game a look - Klei Entertainment will also be there, hopefully showing off Shank.

PSN Minis: Gameloft Reveal PSP Minis Lineup - What Can You Expect?

gameloftminis.pngGameloft have revealed their plans for the PSP minis program - 5 of their most popular titles are making their way over from the iPhone and onto the PSP mini program - Hero of Sparta, Let's Golf, Real Soccer 2010, Asphault 5 and UNO.

But what are each of these games, and what can we expect from them? How do they differ from their iPhone or DSi counterparts, and what prices might they retail at? We look at them all to give you a quick idea on what you might be seeing in just over a month's time.

XBLA: Deals Of The Week Revealed For September

dealoftseptember.jpg

Microsoft's Deal Of The Week promotions have been quite the success for the Xbox Live Arcade - not so much for anything else (A theme price reduction? Really?) but Microsoft are planning on a full month of XBLA bargains, according to the official Japanese Xbox blog.

According to the blog the month will start with Penny Arcade Adventures Episode 2, which on August 31st will be priced 33% off at 800 Microsoft Points. On September 7th Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords will be priced for a bargain 400MSP - 50% off its current price, and 66% off the price it originally started at. I'm surprised that it's not Galactrix, but oh well.

On September 14th Tozai's Lode Runner, much like their R-Type Dimensions did this month, will be 33% off at 800MSP. Finally on September 21st Pinball FX will be made cheap at just 400MSP.

Also they have revealed that Yo Ho Kablammo, one of the last winners of Dream-Build-Play 2007, will be released next week alongside Defense Grid for 800MSP.

Now although these have been unveiled by the official Japanese blog, this might not be the case for America. If the Deal Of The Week is something that is not available in Japan they tend to get something else - like how they got 50% off SoulCalibur this week instead of GTA Lost & The Damned. Just keep that in mind.

XBLA: 2K Reveal Axel & Pixel

silverwishaxelpix.jpg

After appearing on the ESRB website just a few days ago, 2K Games have revealed Axel & Pixel, a new point and click adventure for the Xbox Live Arcade.

Axel & Pixel is a story about a man and his dog, lost in a strange dream world. The game involves large, hand drawn environment where you must solve puzzles with a point-and-click interface.

The official website shows off some of the mechanics you may use in the full game - using your dog to make a water wheel move or using a pump to bring the water level up.

The game is developed by Silverwish games, and is intended to be released this Fall.

DSiWare: Ninja Turtles Getting Re-Shelled On The Nintendo DSi?

tmntdsii.png

Say what you will about Turtles In Time Reshelled, but the game has sold incredibly well since its release on the Xbox Live Arcade. Clearly people want some classic beat-em-up action featuring the four colored Turtles, and now they'll be able to take it on the road - with the Nintendo DSi.

The Australian Office of Film and Literature Classification has added a separate rating from the XBLA and PSN versions specific to the Nintendo DSi. It appears that it will be developed by Ubisoft Singapore, who are the people behind its console cousin.

This version will be interesting to watch - will it still try to push a 3D version on the system, or will it be a return to the strictly 2D routes of the original? We'll have to wait and see.
