PSN: Creat Studios Reveal Smash Cars For PSN

08.jpg

The first of two titles by Creat Studios has been revealed - a complete rework of their PlayStation 2 title Smash Cars for the PlayStation Network.

Real-time physics, innovative stunts and next-generation graphics combine into a dynamic, tricked-out single and multiplayer RC car racing experience where players twist and turn, grind and gear up, performing aerial tricks and stunts while racking up trophies and points as they race to the finish, all in an unlikely location. Set on a beautiful and tranquil Mediterranean island, the fast-moving, bumper car gameplay style transforms this calm and relaxing setting into a dynamically frenzied raceway. A high-speed mini car racing game with a distinct arcade flavor, gameplay is presented from the unique perspective of a small RC vehicle, setting out to conquer the big world. Players will enjoy realistic driving physics and suspension as the tiny vehicles interact with full-size people and other beach dwellers along their path to victory.

The game's looking very nice, certainly better than the original game. It's basically a mixture of ReVolt and a Motorstorm lite - with similar boost mechanics, the over exaggerated physics and even the lack of a race map. The original game got some good reviews, and with this new coat of paint and, we assume, ground up reworking of the title, this could be a big item for the PlayStation Network this year. The press release states the game has multiplayer, so we hope this is 8-player online. Whether the game has split screen modes for local play is currently unknown.

While WipEout HD may have raised the bar extremely high, and the right price point this could do very well. The game is set to be released in Q2 of this year.

XBLA: XNA Roundup #10, Top 10 Xbox Live Community Games

In celebration of the 10th episode of the XNA Roundup show on Youtube, Nick has decided to list of what he believes to be the Top 10 XNA Community Games currently available on the platform.

It's a good list, and filled with almost all of the great games currently available on XNA Community Games. Miner Dig Deep wins the top spot, but personally the list is missing my two favorites - Blow and Carneyvale Showtime, both which I highly recommend.

WiiWare: Fish'em All WiiWare Bound?

fishemall.png

A small update to the Australian classification website has revealed that game company Abylight may be working on a new WiiWare fishing game, titled Fish'em All.

The rating, which also appeared on the German USK rating board with little notice, has shown up to be developed and published by Abylight themselves, further pointing to this being a WiiWare title. Their website also specifies that they are a WiiWare developer, but have not announced any WiiWare games.

Abylight are a Spanish developer who work in Barcelona, who had previously worked in the mobile phone industry and recently did Elite Forces: Unit 77, a game similar to Killzone: Liberation, for the Nintendo DS. While a fishing game may not be the most exciting thing in the world, those who got burned by Cocoto Fishing Master may have something more to look forward to this year.

popemwiiw.pngPop Them, Drop Them SAMEGAME

Wii Points: 500
Game Type: Puzzle, Action
Control Type: Wii Remote, Nunchuk
Players: 1-4
Publisher: HUDSON SOFT

"Same Game is a simple yet engrossing puzzle game where you clear matching blocks in sets of 2 or more."

"Score high by clearing out more blocks at once. If you manage to clear the entire grid, you can keep on playing with a whole new layout. Getting rid of all those blocks is the key to raking in the points!"

"Adjust the difficulty in a one-player game by trying different grid sizes and numbers of colors. Play it your way!"

"Up to 4 players can face off in any one of 3 multiplayer modes. "Fame Game", the most straightforward choice, is similar to the one-player version. "Shame Game"" turns the tables on the players, forcing them to go for the lowest score. Finally, in "Blame Game", it's a free-for-all as everyone vies for blocks on one big grid."

WiiWare: Hudson's Water Warfare Revealed - Online Super Soakers Matches

water_warfare_screen_04.jpg

Initially leaked by the German rating board, Hudson's latest original IP for the WiiWare platform has been revealed.

Water Warfare is an online multiplayer shooter which disguises itself as harmless water gun fights in playgrounds and beaches. You'll have several different water guns to choose including shotgun and rocket launcher equivalents, and you can grab several different kinds of protection, like raincoats and umbrellas.

The game will support both local offline multiplayer as well as 8 player online deathmatch modes. With what Hudson learned from their Onslaught title a couple of months ago, along with the childish aesthetic, this could end up being quite a bit of fun on the Wii. It's certainly the most E10+ shooter I've ever seen.

Reminds me of the old Duke Nukem Caribbean: Life's a Beach expansion in terms of absurdity. If it can garner an audience it'll be a hit.

PSN, WiiWare, XBLA: Military Madness Returns For All Platforms

nectarislogo.pngIn the second of Hudson Entertainment's digital download announcements for today, NECTARIS: Military Madness, the classic turn-based strategy game is coming to the Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and WiiWare.

Military Madness is a turned based strategy game that started on the TurboGrafx-16 that is similar to that of Nintendo's Advance Wars franchise. Using a hex grid, players move their units across a battlefield and attack the opposition using your terrain advantages for you, and capture territory in order to get more units on your side.

Military Madness will be changing things up in this version, with a complete reworking of the graphics and having several addition to the gameplay. Previous installments have been somewhat ugly on the battlefield, but this installment intends to modernize the game with a new 3D view. Something a bit better than Commanders: Attack of the Genos I hope.

The game will also support up to 4 player in a new multiplayer mode. Previous installments have only had 2 player battles. There will also be new units, including a "commander unit".

Through some sleuthing we also discovered this resume, which leads us to believe that this game is being developed by BackBone Entertainment, who previously worked with Hudson on the ever popular Bomberman Live on Xbox Live Arcade, the upcoming port to the PSN as well as numerous classic remakes for Capcom. They appear to be working on the just announced Diner Dash as well. Whether they are also working on the WiiWare version of the title, which Hudson have been known to develop new games internally, is currently unknown.

Unfortunately, no screenshots have been released for the game. Despite that they have revealed that they are aiming for a Summer 2009 release date, but knowing the Xbox Live Arcade that date is very tentative.

After the somewhat poor reception of Sierra and Southend Interactive's Commanders: AOTG on Xbox Live Arcade, a new turn based strategy game is just what each platform needs right now. Let's just hope Backbone can pull it off.

PSN, WiiWare, XBLA: Diner Dash Spreading Across XBLA, PSN And WiiWare

dinerdash1.jpg

In one of the most obvious choices for a console download game, Hudson have revealed that they are working on a brand new version of Diner Dash for the Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and WiiWare.

Instead of doing the quick and easy thing of throwing the original game straight up onto each platform, Hudson have commissioned a complete 3D reworking of the game, the first time Flo has been outside the second dimension.

This entry appears to be taking on the design of the original two Diner Dash games, but with the multiplayer aspect brought into the most recent incarnation Diner Dash: Hometown Hero.

If you've not heard of Diner Dash, the game lets you take control of Flo as she runs around to seat patrons in her diner. You will take orders, deliver food, take payment and bus tables as efficiently as possible within the time limit allowed. It's a very long running series and a pinnacle on how well an independent developed casual game can work, though they have perhaps stretched out the Dash series to its limits, it's still working very well for PlayFirst.

The two multiplayer modes are Team Dash and Head to Head mode. While the PC games have only ever gone up to two players, you will be able to go up to eight in this version.

As with Military Madness, through some sleuthing we also discovered this resume, which leads us to believe that this game is being developed by Backbone Entertainment, who previously worked with Hudson on the ever popular Bomberman Live on Xbox Live Arcade. Whether they are also working on the WiiWare version of the title, which Hudson have been known to develop new games internally, is currently unknown.

The screenshots and information sounds much more like an XBLA and PSN title than WiiWare - there have been very few titles that support eight players on the platform. If it is, fantastic as we really need more of that on WiiWare, but for now, until we see some direct feed Wii screens, be wary.

PSN, XBLA: GDC '09: New Details On Star Trek DAC Revealed

star-trek-dac-20090324053647317.jpg

Originally revealed through a leaflet in a bluray box set, new details on Star Trek DAC have been exposed through IGN and Joystiq chatting with the developers at GDC.

Star Trek D.A.C is an top down space shooter with online multiplayer. In this game you control either the Federation or the Romulans and battle it out in 6v6 space battles.
While other games have attempted a similar style on Xbox Live Arcade, notably Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek DAC will feature some resource gathering which allows you to upgrade your ship.

While the game is being released around the same time as the movie, it does not particularly include any ties to it. It's not really a narrative based adventure, which I don't think many expected it to be anyhow.

Meanwhile IGN have gotten their hands on the first screenshots for the game. It doesn't look too bad, but it also doesn't seem to stand out a whole lot against the competition.

Will it be better than previous Xbox Live multiplayer space shooters? It's a difficult genre to get into for the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, a lot of people may dismiss it purely on the space shooter aesthetic. Hopefully the Star Trek license can continue to keep a good amount of people playing it after release. Check out more information at Joystiq's link below.

XBLA: Aussie Dev Brings "Halfbrick Fridays" Casual Series To XNA Community Games

The XNA Community Games have been mostly known for being created by a couple of guys in a room, but it has yet to be truly taken advantage of by companies which are that little bit bigger.

Halfbrick, an independent game developer in Brisbane, Australia are like many smaller developers, they tend to work on Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable software. The XBLA, PSN and WiiWare forefront allows them to begin working on next generation consoles with ease. Their first plan of action is the new Halfbrick Fridays series of games, developed for the XNA Community Games space.

Their first title, Halfbrick Blast Off, is a relaxing puzzle game which has you control a small space ship where you try and grab all the lost spacemen out in the void of space. Using a limited thrust maneuver, along with the gravitational pull of the surrounding planets, you must try to grab as many as you can and get to the space gate. It's a little similar to one of Nintendo's WiiWare titles Orbient, but with a far more game like aesthetic.

The other titles in the Halfbrick Fridays series include Halfbrick Echoes, Halfbrick Thrusts and Halfbrick Zombies.. With the XNA Community Games marketplace being very similar to the iPhone Apps store, Halfbrick are able to make several games very quickly with a quick turnover for very simple ideas.

Halfbrick Blast Off is set to be released onto the XNACG Marketplace on March 27th - this Friday, and the other titles will be released throughout the next few months, with possibly more on the way. It's a shame that, like all other Australians, they will not be able to sell their games in Australia, as the Xbox Live Community Games marketplace is not available in out country. I'm hoping we'll hear something very soon rectifying that situation.

I hope that more independent developers try something like this, working on those cool, small ideas which can be created and tested very quickly, much like the development of games for the iPhone. Hopefully we'll hear more about their other games very soon.

PSN: Noby Noby Boy Confuses Us With Multiplayer

Yup, that's multiplayer alright. It certainly doesn't make Noby Noby Boy any less confusing though, which may or may not be a good thing.

If the developers do continue to create new content like this for Noby Noby Boy, we could see it sell for quite some time. Go you strange, stretchy dog man thing, go.

PSN, XBLA: GDC '09: Polytron Release New Fez Trailer

Still assumed to be an Xbox Live Arcade title, though the actual development platform has yet to be revealed, Fez blew many minds back at the 2008 Independent Games Festival . It's been a year since, and with it a new trailer.

Still no official announcement on a platform, but right now all I want to do is play it. It looks fantastic.

WiiWare: GDC '09: Virtual Console Arcade Announced, Wii Storage Solved

virtconarcade.jpeg
Photo taken by Jon Snyder / Wired.com

Nintendo has revealed at Nintendo president Satoru Iwata' s GDC keynote that Nintendo's Virtual Console is being expanded to include original Arcade games - and that they've finally solved the Wii's "fridge space" issues.

Starting from today, those in North America and Europe can now download Namco's Gaplus, Mappy and Tower Of Druaga and Tecmo's Starforce, and have already revealed that Sega's Space Harrier and Namco's Return Of Ishtar, Solvalou and Emereldia are also coming, so we at least know of three companies on board for this service. No sign of Nintendo themselves yet, but it would be great to finally play the original Donkey Kong arcade game with the additional level.

The four new titles are currently 500 in Europe, and strangely North America has to be an additional 100 Wii Points for Gaplus among the set of them. In Japan all the games are 800 Wii Points, just to make it more confusing. The Namco games also include several extra options like 16:9 support, and they're planning to bring almost everything over.

loadfromsd.jpg
Photo taken by FoxHimself / NeoGAF

On top of this announcement, Nintendo have finally revealed and released the answer to the Wii's limited memory problem. In the latest Wii firmware update, now out everywhere, you can switch over to an "SD Card" menu and load your WiiWare and Virtual Console titles from the menu directly. The limit to how much a Wii can read off an SD card has been increases to 32GB, over the original limit of 2GB.

This is absolutely fantastic news for WiiWare players and those who use the Virtual Console on a consistent basis. It's nice to see Nintendo finally break through with new functionality for the Wii.

PSN, XBLA: Wolfenstein 3D Coming To XBLA And PSN

wolfensteinxblapsn.jpg

Through all the frantic news of the Game Developer's Conference, the ESRB got the chance to slide out a little update to their rating lists. In said list - Wolfenstein 3D for the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network

With the new Wolfenstein game coming to consoles at the end of the year, it's not much of a surprise to see the original game come out as well, but since we've already had DOOM on the system, Wolfenstein 3D may be a little too ancient. If they add Spear Of Destiny we might be onto something.

With the game just released on iPhone, and available right now and playable on anything on Steam, a XBLA and PSN version might be a bit of a waste. Wouldn't it be hilarious if they completely remade Wolfenstein with new graphics though? That'd be something to see.

But come on Activision and id Software, sure you're releasing Quake Arena sometime this year, but where are Doom II, Quake, Quake II and the Commander Keen collection? That's what we really want to see on XBLA and PSN. Get to it!

Source: ESRB.

PSN, WiiWare, XBLA: First Screens of NECTARIS: Military Madness

nectarisfirst.jpg

Hudson have revealed the first screenshots of the upcoming remake of NECTARIS: Military Madness, coming to all platforms later this year. From the press release:

"Military Madness will come with a platoon of features! With the newly implemented 4-person multiplayer, you can coordinate strategies or taunt foes in co-op or vs. multiplayer modes! Whether it's locally or online, no two battles will be the same! You can also choose commanders with 20 different unique abilities to lead your forces. Along with online leaderboards which track every detail and statistic, you'll even earn experience in each match like a true general on the field. Additionally, multiple command views let you strategize in 2.5D and let you see your battles unfold in 3D in cinematic camera action."

The game is actually looking quite nice, though certainly could be better. It looks better than Commanders: Attack Of The Genos on XBLA at the very least, but hopefully the terrain changes things up a bit later in the game.

Check out the brand new screenshots here.

WiiWare: Drill Sergeant Mindstrong, Penguin & Friends Coming To WiiWare

penguinfriends.png

Two more games that are possibly WiiWare bound have shown up on the ESRB Database - Drill Sergeant Mindstrong and Penguin & Friends

Drill Sergeant Mindstrong is being published by XSEED Games is a "collection of mini-games in which players train and compete in math, rhythm, and reflex/timing drills". The ESRB description says it includes army-like salutes and marching in time.

Siliconera suggests this might be an Americanization of Discipline, a WiiWare title by XSEED and Marvelous for the Japanese WiiWare. Going by this video of the game, which tries to make a little sense as possible, I have my doubts about that. Still, it doesn't sound like a full retail release, but you never know these days.

Penguin & Friends on the other hand is something a little simpler and easy to understand. The ESRB descrption states that the game is a puzzle game where you move penguins around a hexagonal grid, where you have to collect fish. The one with the most fish wins.

The game is being developed by Gammick Entertainment, who brought us the surprise WiiWare title Family & Friends Party a few weeks ago. We wouldn't be surprised if this suddenly shows up soon.

PSN, XBLA: The Original Call Of Duty Coming To Consoles For The First Time

callofdutyoriginal.png

Rating websites around the world are exploding with information, revealing a ton of new titles that we've yet heard a peep about. The latest being Infinity Ward's Original Call Of Duty, coming to the PlayStation Network and the Xbox Live Arcade.

Despite Call Of Duty 2 and beyond being incredible hits on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 - one game in the series never came to consoles. The original Call Of Duty was never released on the original Xbox or PlayStation 2 and only came out on PC, instead Activision pushed Call Of Duty: Finest Hour and Big Red One side stories to the consoles. This will mean that the Xbox 360 will now be the one console you can play every single mainline title in the Call Of Duty series.

The first game was released back in 2003 and won a ton of awards. It will be interesting to see if this holds up. Will it include just a single player mode, or will it come complete with the multiplayer as well? What of United Offensive, the game's one expansion pack? So many questions.

It's certainly an interesting game to be coming out from Activision. With the release of Vigilante 8 Arcade and the reveal that they are bringing Wolfenstein 3D to each platform, it's strange to see something so recent come back as well. Hopefully our plead for Tony Hawk 2 making a return isn't in vain.

WiiWare: GDC '09: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As a Darklord Makes You Defend Actual Towers

lifeasadark.jpg

In Nintendo president Satoru Iwata's Keynote at the Game Developer's Conference, it was revealed that a semi-sequel to My Life As A King would be making it to WiiWare this year courtesy of Square Enix.

My Life As A Darklord will put you in the shoes of the Darklord's daughter who is in charge of dispensing heroes who attempt to steal the Dark Crystal. Essentially the opposite of what My Life As A King was, and like it it's a different experience to your regular Final Fantasy games.

In essence, this is a Tower Defense game, but unlike that of Crystal Defenders this will feature a more vertical stage to wreak havoc onto. You must set traps and deploy your minions with caution as you place them throughout the many levels of your keep.

It's looking very nice - far more thought out that Crystal Defenders's ports to other consoles have been. Definitely something to look forward to.

You can check out the official site here, though there's not much to look at right now. Worthplaying have gotten their hand on six direct feed screens which you can take a gander at here.

WiiWare: GDC '09: Final Fantasy IV: The After Years Finally Confirmed For WiiWare

ffivafterscreen.jpg

We've been talking about it for a while, but Square Enix have finally revealed Final Fantasy IV: The After Years is coming exclusively to WiiWare.

Unlike Square Enix's Crystal Defenders, this port from phone to consoles has had a little more care taken into its development as it will feature true widescreen support.

The game follows Ceodore, who is the son of FFIV's heroes Cecil and Rosa as you follow your player through the world on his own adventure, meeting other characters old and new.

The official site is currently up, but there is little information available on it. Worthplaying has gotten its hands on several screenshots of the game, which you can view here.

WiiWare: GDC '09: Rock N' Roll Climber Ultimate Spider-Man Simulator

Revealed through the ESRB rating website last week, Rock N' Roll Climber has made its debut this week at the Nintendo keynote in its full rock climbing glory.

Using both the Wii Remote and Wii Balance Board, players can act like true rock climbers by using all the parts of their body. As seen in the video above courtesy of Kotaku, you too can see how you can climb walls like Spider-Man.

It may make you look absolutely ridiculous, but it's doing what it's set out to do - make you climb rock walls. This kind of crazy tech demo stuff is just what the WiiWare should really do far more often.

XBLA: Porn Comes To XNA Community Games

xnacgporn.jpg

[Update: And It's been taken down from the store. Swift moving Microsoft]

It was bound to happen.

One of the most recent additions to the XNA Community Games library is a game called Break One Out. Going by the name alone you'd expect it to be nothing more than another Breakout or Arkanoid clone. It certainly is, and a bad one at that, but Break One Out has a catch - you break blocks to reveal nude images.

The creator "Kaos nyrb", or Kitty as she so claims, has added "A wide range of over 30 unique levels each including an unlockable pictures of me". The screenshot attached, even without the censor, doesn't even begin to tell you how close the game gets to full blown nudity - playing the free trial reveals an image of Kitty with nothing but tiny black bars holding back her modesty.

Unlike Xbox Live Arcade titles, which uphold the ESRB rating system, XNA Community Games have their own rating system which give players an idea from 1 to 3 on how much Violence, Sex and Mature Content can be found in the game. Clearly the second one is quite high in this game.

It's all within the rules of the XNACG of course. Heck, a game like the upcoming Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Smash will fetaure similar imagry, but with cartoon characters. Will this game begin an outcry of the XNA Community Games lack of moderation by Microsoft? It certainly could, and if we end up seeing this game on Major Nelson's Top 10 lists we could easily see a barrage of copy cats.

Let's hope we don't.

XBLA: Casual Game SuperCow Now On XNA Community Games

Video: Supercow gameplay

Here on GamerBytes I've previously rattled on about how the XNA Community Games channel hasn't been getting a whole lot of attention from the mainstream press. It also hasn't been taken advantage of by actual developers wanting to test the waters on some smaller games, though that seems to be changing.

The latest title on XNA Community Games, SuperCow, is just the kind of game I'm talking. Created by NevoSoft, SuperCow is a simple 2D platformer aimed at kids, but it comes with some nice, crisp graphics which you don't tend to see on XNA Community Games.

The game has appeared on many PC portals, including BigFishGames and GameHouse. It has now been ported to XNACG by a surprising benefactor - CTXM Games.

CTXM Games are the company behind many of the Xbox Live Arcade ports of PopCap games, including Zuma and Bejeweled 2. They're also headed to create the upcoming Warriors brawler as well.

SuperCow is the kind of game that can be easily ported to the XNACG Space, much like how games are getting ported over to the iPhone. It will be interesting to see how this game fares in the general marketplace, it could end up doing quite well for itself given the right push. It's available now for 400 Microsoft Points - definitely give it a go.
