XBLA: Sega Vintage Collection Expands - Sonic 3, Gunstar Heroes And More

sv_sonic3.jpg

With the Ultimate Genesis Collection just released in North America, it's been up in the air on whether Sega would continue their Vintage Collection line of games over the Xbox Live Arcade and if they would expand to the PlayStation Network. Sure, we've seen the ESRB updates for these titles, but they could have just been a required update due to the collection.

But it seems that Sega will continue on the tradition, with Netherlands Sega website SegaOnline releasing some new photos from an anonymous tipster, showing off Sonic 3 and Gunstar Heroes.

SegaOnline are claiming that Altered Beast, Comix Zone, Gunstar Heroes, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Shinobi are currently listed as upcoming titles. We had previously discussed that Phantasy Star II could also be a contender. Which Shinobi this is (Arcade? Revenge Of? Shinobi 3?) is also up for debate, and the inclusion of Altered Beast makes me think Sega still believes people actually liked that game.

The inclusion of Gunstar Heroes is an interesting one, as it is the only game here not in the Ultimate Genesis Collection. It was a strange omission, so it's good to see again on Xbox Live Arcade.

My main grip here is that Sonic 3 will be released seperately. I don't know how many times people have to whine about it, but releasing Sonic 3 separate from Sonic & Knuckles is absolutely ridiculous. I do hope that when they do release Sonic & Knuckles, it can read your Sonic 3 savegame and unlock that mode. If it doesn't it would be a huge "screw you" to the people who loved these games back in the day.

Totally agree, S3 & Knuckles should be the actual title on there.

I have little faith in the leadership at SEGA, and little decisions like this only decreases it.

Gunstar Heroes with online Co-Op would be a must buy for me.

Wow, I´ve been hoping for Shinobi & Gunstar Heroes for XBLA for years :), since here in Europe the Virtual Console Versions only run in 50Hz with borders.

I think the only realistic possibilities are the the Original Arcade Shinobi or Shinobi 3 for the Genesis, but since both are aabsolutely awesome, I´ll be happy with each of them :)

The whole thing is kind of a screw you to everyone involved. They release a compilation only to release another one on XBLA with one different game?

Just doesn't make sense to me. Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles are both on the new compilation disc. It doesn't combine them. I would be surprised if they'd do otherwise in this case... and if so, that's pretty crappy too. I pay $30 for these games and have to pay more for that?

The whole thing is lame.

this seriously makes little sense of any kind. considering the only title of the bunch with seriously awesome multiplayer is Gunstar Heroes, thus worthy of being released outside of the collection.

unless there's an insane number of special features, this seems pretty hard to justify.
