WiiWare: NA WiiWare Update - Midnight Bowling And MadStone Now Available For Download

This week we've got two new titles for WiiWare - Midnight Bowling, a game created by GameLoft and based on their original phone version (but far improved) and MadStone, RiverMan Media first foray into the console downloadable platform.

Midnight Bowling™ (Gameloft, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points):

Plunge directly into the trendy and electric atmosphere of Midnight Bowling. With awesome playing sensations, prepare for ultra-fun gaming thanks to a new physics engine that lets you control your throws precisely and easily with your Wii Remote™ controller and make spectacular spins that will impress your opponents. madstone_3.jpg

MadStone (Riverman Media, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points):

Time is short. Earth trembles as the forces of nature stir and grow restless. Can you turn the tide? In this dynamic puzzle game, you must clear the path for your elemental MadStones to reach the bottom of the screen. Blocks can be broken by striking them directly or by the force of falling objects. The novice tries frantically to break enough blocks, while the master sets up cascading collapses with only a handful of direct strikes. As two sides struggle for domination, titanic forces build, only to be unleashed in an earth-shaking final confrontation. Experience the mystical single-player journey, or challenge a friend in competitive two-player mode.

WiiWare: More On Boingz From NinjaBee

After last weeks announcement that downloadable game aficionados NinjaBee would be working on a WiiWare title Boingz, now we've got a ton of new information about it.

Developed by the award-winning studio NinjaBee and published by Real, Boingz introduces players to bendy, stretchy little critters who've found themselves scattered about an alien world. Players must help the Boingz free the rest of their friends and find their way back home by solving a series of addicting, mind-bending puzzles across thirty levels of fun. Using the Wii RemoteTM to grab, stretch and fling the rubber-band bodies of the Boingz, players direct the team one by one to bounce around the environments, traverse the seas and even build bridges with their own bodies. Created exclusively for WiiWare, the single-player world of Boingz is a surreal, colorful landscape that will entertain players of all ages.

"Working with RealNetworks has allowed us to branch out to Nintendo's Wii and create an innovative new IP with awesome physics and fantastic visuals," said Steve Taylor, President of NinjaBee. "While we are best known for our collection of titles on other platforms, Nintendo's WiiWare will bring to life a game that we have wanted to make for a long time and believe fans will truly enjoy."

You can also check out several screenshots of the title here, as well as check out the new website here.

WiiWare: New Cave Story Media - Fact Sheet, Video Released

Kombo seems to have gotten its hands on the press release for the upcoming Cave Story port for WiiWare. It looks like they're doing some great care with it too.

Arguably the most well-known indie game of all time, Cave Story features an completely original storyline perfect for the Wii audience.

Cave Story is an action-adventure game from the critically acclaimed
independent designer, Daisuke Amaya--or Pixel to his fans.

Overflowing with unmatched charm and character, Cave Story takes players into a world where a race of rabbit-like creatures, called Mimigas, run free on a serene floating island.

The once-carefree world is in danger of disaster at the hands of a maniacal
doctor. The Mimigas' only hope is in the hands of a quiet, amnesiac soldier
named Quote. Players take control of Quote and learn the origins of the
floating island's power.

GAME FEATURES:
o Offers standard definition and Wii-exclusive progressive (480p)
graphics
o 4:3 and 16:9 resolution support
o New character designs by creator/designer, Daisuke Amaya
o 10 unique weapons to find and upgrade

o 15 levels to explore in the vast world
o Classic Controller support
o Three unique endings

IGN have also broken a bit of an embargo (supposedly), and have released 3 new videos of the game - one above, and two more you can view here.

The website should also be updating later today. Keep an eye on http://www.cavestorywii.com for the latest information.

WiiWare: GoNintendo Has The Skinny On The Nintendo Media Summit

cavey.jpgThe lucky sods over at GoNintendo were invited to the Nintendo Media Summit, in which the people in North America were able to have a look at some of the games Nintendo announced late last week. They've got a ton of new previews of some of the most interesting titles that will be showing on later this year and into 2009.

- Cave Story Impressions
- World of Goo Impressions
- Strong Bad Episode 3 Eyes On Impressions
- Tetris Party Impressions
- Boingz Impressions

They have also cornered Tyrone Rodriguez and Pixel from Nicalis and interviewed them about how the Cave Story port to WiIWare came about.

RMC: How exactly did you go about securing Cave Story for the Wii?

TR: Like most people who have played the game, I was introduced to Cave Story by a friend a few years back and always thought it was amazing, freeware-or-not. Playing the game made me curious as to why no company had ever attempted to create a commercial port to any console. That led me to draft an e-mail to Amaya-san introducing myself and asking what he thought of the idea of a commercial port. After that initial e-mail and his response, we continued to correspond pretty regularly. A year’s worth of communication later, we both decided that it would be a good idea to bring it to Wii.

Check out the entire interview here.

PSN, WiiWare, XBLA: Mega Man 9 DLC Now Available On WiiWare, XBLA and PSN To Follow This Week

XBLA: Xbox.com Splash Page Watch - Beat'n Groovy, Shadow Assult: Tenchu Rear Their Heads

bntsatenchu.jpg

Today we got the update for this weeks Xbox Live Arcade titles, but something was missing... oh, that's right! Shadow Assault Tenchu was announced on their Japanese website as coming out this week.

Well that looks like it still might be true - The Japanese Xbox.com splash page is up, and says its coming out tomorrow for Japan. No English page has currently been uploaded.

Could this be another case of Japan of all places getting games earlier than other countries? This happened exactly the same way with Shotest Shogi, which was released in Japan roughly a month before the release in North America.

bngbannerdefault.jpg

In another update, the page for Beat'n Groovy has also been added to the Xbox.com splash page list. Remember - much like Frogger 2 and Coffeetime Crosswords, two other Konami games made by Voltex Inc, the game has yet to be officially announced. Poor going by Konami - you'd think that with the success of Castlevania: SOTN they'd care a little more about their products.

XBLA: New Vigilante 8 Arcade Trailer - Start Shooting On November 5th

A new trailer popped up for Vigilante 8 Arcade today, finally some ingame footage of it being played. And it also announces a release date - November 5th is the day we'll be driving around a barnyard and blowing stuff up. Mark it down.

PSN, WiiWare, XBLA: Best Of Gamerbytes: Caving In

cavey.jpgA big week for WiiWare this week, a ton of new games have been announced for the service, and most of them look to be bringing some pretty strong content. Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands, Boingz and Cave Story - 2D platform / puzzle titles that I can really get into.

Xbox Live Arcade

MBL Stickball On Xbox Live Arcade This Week
This week Take2 are expanding their Baseball lineup with MLB Stickball, the first sports title in some time for the XBLA. Looks like it might be a bit of fun.

Void Star Creations Present - Project 2
The people behind the hit XBLA title Poker Smash are hard at work on a new title, which hasn't got a name yet. It will involve a big world to explore, Fast paced melee and ranged combat, Loot, RPG elements, and Treasure hunting. They've got a new blog and are being very open with sharing every little thing they're doing. Fascinating stuff.

New Vigilante 8 Arcade Trailer - Start Shooting On November 5th
Vigilante 8 is done, and Isopod Labs have a new trailer with the first real gameplay of the title. They've announced a date too. It's on the same week as Gears of War 2 though.. hopefully it does well.

PlayStation Network

PSN Store Update: Geon Now Available, PixelJunk Soundtracks Up For Sale
No games in North America, but Europe did get Geon, the game they missed out on last week. However everyone can now download the PixelJunk Eden soundtrack!

Battle Cars Set For A NA Release Next Week
This Thursday PSN owners should be able to download Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle Cars to their PSN accounts.

Bomberman Live Coming To PSN As Bomberman Ultra
Bomberman is making its way to the PlayStation Network sometime this year - an expansion on Bomberman Live on the Xbox Live Arcade, this version might include a few extra features. A great addition to the PSN.

WiiWare

NA WiiWare Update - Midnight Bowling And MadStone Now Available For Download
This weeks WiiWare update in North America includes Midnight Bowling, a new game by Gameloft, bringing in a single player mode and multiplayer bowling games, and MadStone, an odd puzzle game featuring mad stones.

Nintendo Reveal WiiWare Lineup - Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands And More Coming To WiiWare
Nintendo of Japan released a huge list of upcoming WiiWare titles, many previously unannounced, but a lot of them do look like they'll work on the strength of the Wii. A new Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Island title? Yum.

More On Boingz From NinjaBee
Announced this week was Boingz for WiiWare - an adventure puzzle game featuring little blob creatures that you must fling around with the cursor. Looks interesting.

New Cave Story Media - Fact Sheet, Video Released
Cave Story has finally been announced for WiiWare, and it has been a long time coming. This well known indie darling will be making its way to the console sometime this year.

XBLA: MLB Baseball, Beat'n Groovy, and Shadow Assult: Tenchu

Alright, I'm getting pretty annoyed with this sort of thing Microsoft. How difficult could it possibly be to know what games are coming out each week, and have everything ready for them? How are companies meant to continue making Xbox Live Arcade games if you're not willing to step up to the plate and tell people their game is coming out in the final days before release?

Last week you even forgot that Mega Man 9 was coming out. This week you seemingly had no idea that Beat'n Groovy and Shadow Assault Tenchu were coming out at all. Heck the SAT English Xbox.com splash page doesn't even exist yet.

Geez. Pick your game up Microsoft, you're starting to get Alzheimers.

XBLA: TGS 2008 - Microsoft Keynote Notes - Space Invaders Extreme, Arkanoid and More Announced

spaceinvaders_psp_1207159549.jpg

Today at the Microsoft TGS Keynote, they have announced the next wave of Xbox Live Arcade titles coming out way

Space Invaders Extreme is coming to the Xbox Live Arcade - just as it damn well should. I bought the DS version of this classic game and it truly is a fantastic addition. Think of Space Invaders meets Geometry Wars and Galaga Legions.

They will also be bringing Arkanoid Live to Xbox Live Arcade, most likely in a similar fashion to Arkanoid DS. Arkanoid Live will be loaded with 120 stages and will include online co-op and versus modes. Both Space Invaders Extreme and Arkanoid

Metal Slug 7 has been announced. This game, previously a Nintendo DS exclusive, will feature new missions, new weapons, colossal new bosses, new game modes, and new Slugs to pilot. How different it will be to the DS version is unclear.

King of Fighters '98 Final Bout, based on the recently released PS2 version in Japan, is essentially a remake of the biggest KOF game of its time. It has some redrawn sprites, as well as some new characters.

R-Type Dimensions will feature a new two-player local and online mode, and will allow players to switch seemlessly between a 2D and 3D experience.

XBLA: New Meteos Wars Preview

meteoswars11.jpg

Today IGN got a chance to play Meteos Wars, the updated console revision of the DS action-puzzle game.

The default controls have the A button sliding a Meteos down and the X Button moving it up. You can hold the button down to quickly shuffle blocks around or tap it to move a single square. One of the advantages of playing on a touch screen with Meteos was that you could quickly shift which column you were interacting with by lifting up your hand and placing it somewhere else. Or you could just scratch the bottom of the screen a lot, as was the predominant strategy. Now you'll have to move the cursor around with the analog stick. It's slower than what you could do on the DS, though you can speed up the cursor speed in the options. Still, it took a little getting used to and I found the computer AI putting up quite a challenge even on the third stage of the mission mode.

It's looking pretty good. I just hope that the controls can be satisfying without the stylus. I'm guessing Gunpey will be out next year then?

XBLA: Banjo Kazooie XBLA - Then and Now

Gametrailers.com have put up this great video showing off the difference between the original Banjo Kazooie on the Nintendo 64, and the updated, higher resolution version making its way to the Xbox Live Arcade.

XBLA: TGS 2008 - Xbox Live Arcade Montage

GameVideos have the montage footage from the Tokyo Game Show, showing off footage of Space Invaders Extreme, Arkanoid Live, and R-Type Dimensions. Unfortunately KIF '98 and Metal Slug 7 were just in name only.

WiiWare: More Art Style Games Named - Cubello and Rotohex For WiiWare

bitg.dial.jpgFinally, some new information from the Australian classification website. It's been a while since anything good has been leaked from this website, so it's nice to finally see something.

Nintendo have rated the recently released in North America Orbient for WiiWare, but have rated two others - Cubello and Rotohex.

Rotohex looks like it will be a variant of the Bit-Generation GBA game Dialhex, while Cubello is a bit in the air as to what it is, but chances are it is Coloris

PSN: EU PSN Store Update - Lingerin Shadows, Super Stardust HD Packs, Mega Man 9 DLC

lingerinshadows27.jpg

Linger in Shadows - €2,99 / £1.99 / $4.95AUD

A dreamlike, seemingly random sequence unfolds before your eyes; then it stops, spools back and starts again. Can you influence it? Can you alter or extend what you have already seen?

A collaboration of hypnotic art, subtle gameplay and invigorating music, there are no rules or traditions in Linger in Shadows. The laws of physics and time are irrelevant. This is not a game in the traditional sense, rather an abstract, interactive experience designed to challenge and captivate your inquisitive mind.

Not a game per se, but looks incredibly interesting, as a way to show off your PlayStation 3 power. I need to know more though...

Burnout Paradise came out two weeks ago for Europe, but oddly Australia missed out. This week it's come out for $49.95AUD, which isn't such a bad price considering it's still selling for $80AUD in stores.

PSN: Prince Of Persia Classic Confirmed For PSN

939484_20070611_screen003.jpg

An little article about the PlayStation Network popped up on the UK PlayStation website today, with a nice little tidbit:

A classical Prince

A remake of the original 1989 action adventure that redefined the platform genre, Prince of Persia Classic hits PLAYSTATION Network, enhanced and updated for the High Definition era. Now you can rescue the Princess from the clutches of the evil Jaffar with new character designs, animations, controls, new content and three game modes, including the speed based Normal and Time Attack Modes, and Survival Mode which challenges the most skilled players to complete the game without dying.

Well that settles that then. This was the game that came out on the Xbox Live Arcade mid last year. Nice to see it come out just before the newest Prince of Persia title.

Then a strange purple goo appears. The leprechauns are stunned. Even worse, the magic oak of life loses its power.

It all turns out to be the fault of an evil wizard. You must help the leprechauns defeat him and restore natural order. To do this you need to collect seasonal spirits. - A puzzle game that keeps you hooked
- Colourful visuals and beautiful effects
- Easy to use Wii Remote controls
- Play alone or with a second player
- Use your Mii character

XBLA: Microsoft No Longer Delisting Titles, NXE allows you to remove "0" Point Titles

xbox360_newx_01.jpg

Joystiq has added the full group interview with John Schappert, head of Microsoft Live while at TGS. During the interview they discus the New Xbox Experience as well as delisting XBLA titles.

On Achievements: You will now be able to remove games with zero achievements. This was a problem with the initial dashboard, which made any XBLA demo always be on your account with "zero "achievements. With the "New Xbox Experience" you will be able to remove them.

On Delisting: "I think with the new experience, it'll be easier to find things. I think that was taken a little bit out of context - we were simply setting up parameters for the time where if a game is not selling at all, we have the option to. Right now I don't want to delist titles until it becomes cumbersome to do so. If you can't find what you want, we need to act on that..." "We have no immediate plans to delist Xbox Live Arcade titles"

Much like Cue Sports - Snooker Vs Billiards, another title has popped up on the Australian classification websie for WiiWare - Snowboard Riot from Hudsonsoft.

It's been published by Hudson in Japan, while any titles for Xbox Live Arcade have been published by Hudson in America. It has been the exact same for every other Hudson title on WiiWare.

PSN, XBLA: Age Of Booty Demo Is Awesome, Allows Online Play

ageofbooty_05.jpg

Capcom and Certain Affinity are releasing Age of Booty next week. Thing is, it's really an online title. So how will they get players into the groove? Allow you to play online without paying for it. For a limited time, of course.

The trial of Age Of Booty for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network will both allow users to play online using a new 'credits' system. Both kinds of players will be abel to activate online play twice. Once activated, you can play as much online as you want for 24 hours. After both credits are used up you will not be able to play online anymore.

They're going all out too - online can be played on all 25 maps available to players. You will also be able to use the games split screen multiplayer under the same rules.

The only limits the game gives you are that you cannot play all single player campaigns in trial mode, you cannot save in the level editor, and PS3 users will have to reload the game after every 3 matches. Apparently this is a PS3 security issue regarding add-on content.

This is a fantastic addition and really something that should be encouraged for ALL games. For the upcoming titles on Xbox Live Arcade, Darwinia+, Death Tank, Vigilante 8 Arcade, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Things on Wheels, and Rocket Riot would do a whole lot better if players could understand how the online works. Hell the recently released War World would have done a whole lot better if people could play online, and not just play for 50 seconds of single player.
