PSN, XBLA: Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection Getting Disc Release on PS3 and 360 - The End Of SEGA XBLA Games?

sonic3_01.gif

Over on the Gamefly website, a new SKU has popped up onto the Xbox 360 and PS3 - Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. Care to guess what that is?

Back in July of 2007, the Xbox Live Arcade began to push out a fair few classic Sega games. We got Sonic 1 and 2, Streets of Rage 2, Ecco and Golden Axe. But since then we've seen nothing. SEGA's last effort was an original title - Happy Tree Friends: False Alarm, and not a classic.

Looks like they will be stopping any kind of classic releases. This could be due to many things. There are rumors floating around right now that the Digital Eclipse side of Backbone will be closing down once all their current projects are out the door - notice that we've seen absolutely nothing emulated out of them for a long time now. Their last game on XBLA was Discs of Tron. Companies are now deciding to do their own emulation - with M2 doing the Sega Ages collections in Japan on PS2, SNK Playmore doing their own emulation for Samurai Shodown and Metal Slug, and Konami forgetting about them altogether, and instead pushing out seemingly terrible 'new' games like Frogger 2.

Now this might just end up being an upgraded port of the PS2 game Sega Genesis Collection, which Backbone / Digital Eclipse have also been working on, or this might be the first step on having M2 finally start doing emulation on a HD console.

In the end it will be a better decision for the consumers who want a huge amount of classic Sega titles for a much lower price. Still, it has been great to have the convenience of the Xbox Live Arcade, to just be on your hard drive and play whenever you want, and have some expanded features, like the Streets of Rage 2 online play. I wrote this article sometime ago about what I'd love to see for an XBLA version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and ideas like level time leaderboards cannot happen if it's nothing more than a ton of ROM dumps on a disc.

I guess we'll have to see. Maybe Sega might start making ports on great games they made later on - like the PS2 versions of Virtual On and NiGHTS Into Dreams.

PSN: New SARB Trailer - "RoboVox"

Psyonix Studios have released a new trailer for Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars. This one is a little weird though - it reminds me a lot of the incredibly weird Duke Nukem Trilogy trailer, but not as bad as that - this has actual in game footage too.

XBLA: Duke Nukem 3D Is Your XBLA Game Of The Week

2879528746_7b812c3fd1_o.jpg

Duke Nukem 3D is the big XBLA game this week. Strangely Zombie Wranglers has not appeared once again, despite meaning to come out last week. What's going on there?

Duke Nukem, the politically incorrect action hero and ultimate alien ass kicker, defends Earth and its babes from alien invasion in Duke Nukem 3D. This is the award winning game that helped define the FPS genre, introducing unparalleled interactivity, and a main character that spoke. Take the fight to the aliens across 39 levels featuring Hollywood, Los Angeles, a moon base, and alien spacecraft. Innovative items like the Jetpack, HoloDuke, Shrink Ray, or Pipe Bombs allow you to fight the aliens in any style you want. Defeat the aliens, so Duke can get back to some R&R with a stogie, a warm belly, and a bottle of Jack.

Eight-player cooperative and DukeMatch multiplayer: Play ranked matches in one-on-one or free-for-all for leaderboard spots. A playlist of levels keeps the game fresh, with levels rotating on and off the list. Play co-op with your friends, earning single player achievements or completing the game entirely. It's your choice how to play. By reserving private slots you can play with your friends or with strangers in any combination. Invite away.

User clips: Every time you play a game, a user clip is recorded. View the clips any time in your theater or share with friends who own the game. Upload the clips to leaderboard spots if you complete a level in the fastest time, or if you have the highest score. Use these clips for tips on how to complete a level at speed.

Painless death: Review your play from the start of the level right up until your death, and jump back in at any point. Go back 10 seconds or 10 minutes, the choice is up to you. You can still save and load your game at any point if you prefer.

Gallery: Unlock achievements and Duke Nukem 3D concept art. Visit the Gallery at any time, view never before seen art, and learn more about the game.

Xbox 360 enhancements: The inimitable Duke Nukem returns in updated and improved form on Xbox 360®. The game now features controller vibration, bilinear filtering, motion blur, Xbox LIVE® Vision camera support for DukeMatch, multiplayer, and more.

The game will be 800 Microsoft Points, and should be available everywhere but Japan. Seems they gave it an AO rating at the last minute. Bugger.

PSN: Burnout Paradise Releasing This Week On PSN

2763638994_3ea9c23f84_o.jpg

Criterion Games have revealed that the PSN version of Burnout Paradise will be released this Thursday on the North American PlayStation Store for $29.99.

An interesting thing to note is that the game, when initially downloaded, will only include everything from the retail release. Once you download it, you will be then asked to download all the patches and updated from the server - including the Trophies and Bikes updates.

So in all, it's actually just the retail release of the game, but downloadable. It's not an entirely new skew that had to go through retesting or anything. It certainly makes the case of downloading more retail games entirely through the PSN something a little more plausible.

Burnout Paradise, Mega Man 9 AND Wipeout HD? Best week of PSN ever. Now let's see Europe get screwed once again.

XBLA: The Maw Wins Audience Choice Award At PAX '08

Twisted Pixel's The Maw has won the PAX10 audience choice award from the Penny Arcade Expo this year.

The audience choice award was given by players of the game at PAX. There were ten games on show, including another XBLA game Schizoid, and other favorites such as Audio Surf.

"The intense sense of purpose and camaraderie amongst The PAX 10 was astonishing," commented Michael Wilford of Twisted Pixel. "We feel extremely lucky to have been chosen from such an august group and grateful to have been a part of the PAX experience."

Good on them. It's shaping up to be a great game. Nice to know it won too - I was getting a little afraid that people think it might be too "cute" for the Xbox audience. This and Banjo Kazooie XBLA should fill my real need for some old fashion platforming for this winter.

XBLA: Space Giraffe Soundtrack Released, Jeff Minter Interviewed

Llamasoft have updated their official webpage with a ton of new Space Giraffe content, for all of those who loved the classic game on Xbox Live Arcade.

The update includes several cool bits and pieces. For one, the soundtrack has now been released for free download, which is a lovely little treat to the fans. They have also added an interview with Jeff Minter and Ivan Zorzin from the Japanese magazine Gameside.

If you still haven't bought Space Giraffe, I'd definitely give it a go. It's only 400 Microsoft Points after all. Thanks to rmk106 for letting me know.

PSN, WiiWare, XBLA: Best Of GamerBytes: Time To Kick Ass, Go Retro and Burn Out

dukemegawipe.pngIt's a big week in downloadable games -with Duke Nukem 3D debuting for the Xbox Live Arcade, Mega Man 9 for WiiWare, and WipEout HD for the PlayStation Network.

Despite these debuts, there hasn't really hasn't been a whole lot of big news this week. Still, there have been a few great bits and pieces that have allowed us to understand the ways the downloadable game market is going - companies getting into the business, companies getting out, and companies trying to figure out what went right and wrong on their first attempt at it.

PSN: Zen Studios Bringing The Punisher: No Mercy To The PlayStation Network Exclusively

33omjqu.jpg

Zen Studios and the fellows over at the PlayStation blog have revealed a brand new exclusive to the PlayStation Network - The Punisher: No Mercy.

Based on the Marvel license of the same name, TP: NM is a first person shooter, being created on Unreal Engine 3. It will also be an Arena based multiplayer title, and will allow players to become Frank Castle himself, or one of his many enemies - including Jigsaw and Barracuda.

[Editor nerd note: I wonder if they can do the Punisher MAX series version of Barracuda justice? Highly doubtful, ah well...]

Some new screenshots have been leaked as well, which you can view here (Thank you Goldrusher)

Interesting side note too - back in July we reported that this help page on the PlayStation UK site revealed plenty of unknown PSN titles to the public, including Alien Sports: Minigolf and Maxim Pinball which should be also by Zen Studios. Punisher: War Zone was also on that page - we all just ignored it because of the license! Silly us.

PSN, WiiWare, XBLA: Mega Man 9 DLC Costs You Mega Bucks

megamoney.jpgMega Man 9 was released just yesterday, and we had heard about the Proto Man downloadable content that would be available afterward... but this is ridiculous.

Not only will Capcom be releasing some DLC to play as Proto Man, but they will be releasing 4 extra, separate DLC too. From the game's manual, it describes that you can also download:

Endless Attack Mode - October 6, 300 Wii Points: A level which continues until you die. Try breaking the record for the furthest point.

Proto Man Mode - October 6, 200 Wii points: Play as Proto Man, who has his own abilities, including Slide. There is no story for the Proto Man mode.

Hero Mode - October 20, 100 Wii Points: A more difficult and challenging single player mode.

Superhero Mode - October 20, 100 Wii Points: An even more difficult version of the game.

Special Stage - October 20, 100 Wii Points: Another time attack stage, including a brand new boss to fight against.

Now downloadable content can be pretty cool, but this kind of stuff is on the verge of being as ridiculous as Namco's Katamari DLC. Paying extra for a more difficult mode? This should have been in the game in the first place. It's certainly a different plan to Ben Judd's idea for Bionic Commando Rearmed.

It would have been far better if it wasn't so blatantly close to the game's actual release, and wasn't costing you 800 Wii Points to have the whole experience there. It sounds more like a 250 Wii Point Expansion Pack that could have come a month or two down the road.

It's the Japanese way, unfortunately. It's been said that Namco's entire thought process about DLC is that "Those Americans LOVE DLC!" - making people pay for Beautiful Katamari levels that were already on the disc, and Ace Combat 6 skins. Seems like Capcom of Japan see it in a similar light too - and that means they need a good smack upside the head, GamerBytes argues.

XBLA: War World Finally Coming Out Next Week, Says IGN

We were told some time ago that Ubisoft's War World was still coming to the Xbox Live Arcade - a game which was shown back in the E3 2007 Montage, and was supposedly coming out on August of the same year, but never materialized.

Now over a year since it was meant to be released, IGN have a brand new preview of the title, as well as a date - next week, right along with Capcom's Mega Man 9. The Xbox.com splash page has also updated, originally sporting a very old template.

There is a chance it still may not be out though - Zombie Wrangler's release date was announced by IGN, and said it was meant to be out last week, but it never showed up.

Check out the preview of this game below.

WiiWare: Strong Bad Episode 3 Christened Baddest Of Bands

strongbadbands.jpg

It's been a pretty boring week or two about the rating website circus - nothing has really popped up. While not huge news, as it will probably be announced in a few days, the USK website has revealed the title of the third episode of Strong Bad - Baddest of Bands.

Castle Crashers continues to dominate the charts, beating out new games Feeding Frenzy 2 and Domino Master for the title. Braid and Geometry Wars 2 continue to sell, and once again UNO has crept back up to the charts. Maybe its only way of dying will be with the release of UNO Rush?

WiiWare: Review wrap-up: Wild West Guns

WiiWare World review by Sammy Barker - 7.0 / 10

IGN review by Matt Casamassina - 6.8 / 10

1UP.com review by Andrew Hayward - C+

Eurogamer review by Dan Whitehead - 5.0 / 10

From the reviews, Wild West guns doesn't appear to be too bad of a game - it's a simple premise - bring more of what the duck hunt mini-game brought to Wii Play, and for that it does its job.

Unfortunately it's a fairly limited experience. For one, there is a limited amount of content, havign players repeat similar or exactly the same cycles of enemies during the games 6 levels. It also has no online leader boards - something you'd think would be a must have, instead its based purely on a social level against friends.

XBLA: Peggle XBLA To Come With 4-Player Multiplayer

gfwpeggqb2.jpgTalkingaboutgames.com and their podcast Uncle Gamer Radio were able to get the chance to talk with Greg Canessa, VP of the Video Game Platform Group at PopCap, and released a small, separate podcast discussing their recently released Feeding Frenzy 2 game, as well as discussing their upcoming Peggle release for the platform.

Interview with Greg Canessa - PopCap and Peggle

While we work on preparing the full episode of UncleGamer Radio for this week, we present this special interview with Greg Canessa, VP of the Video Game Platform Group at PopCap Games.

We sit down with Greg to talk about last week's release of Feeding Frenzy 2 on the Xbox Live Arcade, the forthcoming release of Peggle on XBLA, and the upcoming DS games.

If you're a Peggle fan, you're in for a treat, as Greg gives us some exclusive information on what we can expect in Peggle XBLA, the price point of the game, and the map pack releases.

Download the podcast here or join the RSS feed.

In the podcast they were able to get some exclusive information about the game - including that the game is still slated for a 2008 release date. They're currently in the final points of development, and will be sending off the game into certification soon.

Greg also discussed that there is a new two player arena mode, and a four player competitive mode which can be played over Xbox Live. It will also cost 800 Microsoft Points - which is great, considering their PC titles tend to sell for $20.

GameSpot review by Tom Mc Shea - 7.0 / 10

PixelJunk Eden had a lot of hype around it. People fell in love with PixelJunk Monsters and were awaiting PixelJunk Eden, causing plenty of hype. The simple design of the characters and levels made it stand out against everything else that was coming out, and it looked great.

The final game is pretty good - it's got some thumping music, and does exactly what it set itself out to do. While I did enjoy the game, I did find it a little disappointing. It did look to be a relaxing experience, but in the end became quite a frustration to play. Just how you can fall to your death all the time and miss by a smidge can make a man yell at your TV.

Thankfully, there is a demo available, so you can make up your own minds about the game. Definitely give it a go and see if it sticks.

XBLA: Gamasutra Postmortem - Torpex Games' Schizoid

schizoid_shot1.jpg

In the latest of a large amount of features on the Xbox Live Arcade, sister site Gamasutra has given Jamie Fristrom from Torpex Games the chance to say his piece with a postmortem report on their first game - the "best co-op game ever" and first published XNA game Schizoid.

It's four pages of very interesting discussion on the good and bad side of the XNA framework, getting a start up company off the ground, and working completely independent from a publisher.

This quote from the article was about dealing with the single player mode of the "most co-op game ever" - and how games just might not be ready for it just yet.

Although we gave a nod to the single-player with our bot and uber modes, for the most part, we willfully ignored that conventional wisdom, hoping the sacred cow would make good steaks -- surely, we thought, Xbox Live Arcade, where most of its users are already hardcore and wired, is a place where the no-multiplayer-only rule can be broken.

Well, we can tell from the leaderboards that this isn't the case -- far more people are playing single-player than online.

It's surprising, since online co-op is often the number one feature hardcore gamers ask for. In our own belated, informal polling we've discovered that most people don't play co-op Xbox games over the internet.

Of potential players, some don't play online at all; some don't have headsets; some are perfectly willing to deathmatch with strangers but playing co-op with a stranger "feels weird"; with XBLA online populations being what they are, it can take several minutes for someone to show up for a match, and people don't want to wait that long.

Click the link below and read the entire postmortem, it's really some fascinating rhetoric when it comes to working on the Xbox Live Arcade.

XBLA: Banjo Kazooie XBLA Coming Out November 26, Will Cost 1,200 Microsoft Points

jiggy.jpgMicrosoft have announced today that the original Banjo Kazooie is coming to the Xbox Live Arcade on the 26th of November - and will cost the 'premium' price of 1,200 Microsoft Points.

The price is a little bizarre - with the release of Duke Nukem 3D this week which has just as much content from a similar time, but it certainly makes the current Banjo Kazooie deal much more enticing - preorder Banjo Kazooie: N&B and you get this XBLA version not only for free - but two weeks early. Sounds good to me.

They have also announced that the sequel, Banjo Tooie, will be releasing as well in early 2009.

Check back tomorrow for some more news about Banjo Kazooie on Xbox Live Arcade.

PSN, XBLA: IGN Preview Namco's PowerUp Forever

powerupforever.jpg

Namco and Blitz Games announced Powerup Forever sometime ago - at the same time as the original Soulcalibur announcement. It's been sitting around since then - but they've finally brought this XBLA / PSN game out again with IGN giving new impressions of the title.

To make your way through PowerUp Forever you'll need to eliminate the parasite slaves that graze on large dormant enemies, leeching their energy. Kill enough of those little suckers and the Guardian will come out and attack you. Each Guardian, like the enemies of each level, is different. They're typically home to the power you'll get from defeating them and they each have different strategies for beating you.

As you progress, you'll notice that your ship continues to grow. The bigger your ship gets, the larger the enemies that will notice you and thus attack. New enemies continue to pop up as you progress through the various levels.

It's certainly an interesting concept, and the new screenshots give the game a very stylized look to it - something very much needed for this crowded genre. Hopefully it can better Blitz's previous efforts - the Burger King titles.

XBLA: GamerBytes Previews - Banjo Kazooie For XBLA

bkxbla.jpg

It's been nearly 8 years since we've seen a real Banjo Kazooie game, back on the Nintendo 64 it was one of Rare's brightest stars. Now on the Xbox 360 the sequel Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts is set to release sometime in the next few months. To celebrate, Rare and 4J Studios are bringing the game that started it all to Xbox Live Arcade in all its glory.

So how does the game look 10 years later? Surprisingly very solid. While the character models and worlds are very much the same, the games HUD and text have all been upgraded to be clear as crystal. All of the games pickups, from your classic Notes to the Mumbo heads, have been given a bump in resolution as well.

Outside of that, the game looks just like it did before, except now in a higher resolution, in glorious wide screen and without the horrible Nintendo 64 Vaseline filter blurring everything up. The level textures have for the most part been left alone, perhaps bumped up a little bit, but it may just be the lack of blur clogging up the view of the game.

Everything runs along at an incredibly smooth framerate - fixing one of the main problems for the original game and N64 games in general, and the fog distance for enemies and objects has also been improved.

I was able to go through the equivalent of the trial game - Spiral Mountain and Mumbo's Mountain - and it's just as fun to play through as it was 10 years ago. The trial game is very well done, allowing you to get a maximum two Jiggys within Mumbo's Mountain. If you're smart you can get any of the Mumbo's Mountain Jiggys, including using Mumbo's Magic to turn you into an Ant to climb up the hill.

It plays just as well as it originally did. The camera controls make a very smooth transition from the original C buttons to the right analog stick, and doing Kazooie's Talon Trot requires you to hold both triggers, it all fits right at home on the Xbox 360 controller.

From watching the demo footage at the title screen, levels such as Freezeezy Peak, Gobi's Valley and Mad Monster Mansion (a level I had completely forgotten about) continue to look great in high res. I went back to my own cart version of Banjo Kazooie, and the change is just night and day.

Finally, there were rumors that Banjo Kazooie would not be touched in any way - including the Nintendo 64 logo at the beginning and the word "Nintendo" on Mumbo's Xylophone in the intro. Both of these have now been omitted, with Mumbo's Xylophone now sporting the "Microsoft Game Studios" logo. Whether the mention of other Nintendo characters in the final battle has been kept in is currently unknown.

This is more than just emulation - its a great port of a classic platform title that the kids of today missed out on. Banjo Kazooie is set to be released on November 26th 2008 for 1200 Microsoft Points - or you can get it for free with a preorder of Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. Its sequel Banjo Tooie will be available in early 2009.

If you would like to see video of Banjo Kazooie XBLA in action, head over to IGN.com for their video preview.

The Bear and Bird are back! Big thanks for George K. at Rare for getting permission to do this preview.

Strong Bad Episode 2: Strong Badia the Free.

Strong Badia the Free is the second of five monthly episodes starring Strong Bad – the self-proclaimed "coolest person ever" – and the rest of the cast from the popular Homestar Runner web cartoons.

When Strong Bad fails to obey the King of Town's totally unfair email tax, he's placed under house arrest. Once freed from his wrongful imprisonment, Strong Bad goes on a mission to unite the local warring factions under the Strong Badian flag. Is Free Country USA ready for such an awesome ruler?

Strong Bad Episode 2: Strong Badia the Free also has the Videlectrix arcade classic "Math Kickers featuring the Algebros," plus all new achievements, collectibles, costumes, and Teen Girl Squad comics. You can even use Strong Bad's Lappy to send emails and pictures to your Wii friends! So what are you waiting for? Fire up Strong Badia the Free and get ready to kick some doughy King of Town butt!

Cost: 1,000 Wii Points
